Default How long have you ?

Hello and welcome to the RTA forums !

You could drive the distance in a couple of long days so it really comes down to how much time do you have for the trip. If you over-nighted in each of the places you listed your longest journey would be from Yellowstone to SLC which would be a little over 6 hours. On the other hand you could easily spend 3 days driving around Yellowstone.

I will let others with experience of roads into Yellowstone comment on the least mountainous although one of the greatest drives in America is the 'Beartooth Highway' into Yellowstone, but it might not be for you ! Interstates are built with gradual curves and gradients and when sticking on those you will not have any 'cliff hangers', however it's nice to get off of them and explore the countryside. Most main roads, even mountainous ones, are well maintained and designed to take trucks and RV's as well cars which shouldn't present major problems for you unless there is a real phobia in the family.

Thank you for your reply, we are flying into Rapid City on 08/22 and are flying home out of Salt Lake City on 08/30.
We thought we would stay 2 nights in Rapid city and then 1 night in Sheridan or Billings WY, 2 nights Yellowstone , 1 night in Jackson WY and then to Salt Lake City. Does this sound reasonable..... We are from Eastern end of Long Island in NY. We fly to Vegas on 08/21 and then to rapid city arriving around lunchtime the next day, so we should have time and energy to see sights even on the first day. If you have any suggestions please let me know

    Default Sounds fine.

It sounds most reasonable timewise. Other attractions in the area include Badlands, Mt Rushmore, Custer State park, Wind Cave NP, Devils Tower, Bighorn Canyon and of course the Tetons. I have not been yet, but Cody sounds like an interesting town and one you could check out.
