  1. Default Los Angeles to Detroit

I must make this trip in the next 6 months or so, I don't want to take the 40 due to the climb up to Flagstaff
What are your thoughts about taking the 10 to Texas then up, it is longer but seems flatter

    Welcome to the RTA Forum!

What are you driving that has you so concerned about elevation? I-40 certainly does go up in elevation, but it is an interstate highway with gradual slopes and curves that's designed for fully loaded semis to climb these hills while maintaining highway speeds.

There's nothing wrong with I-10, if you really want to go that way, but it will add a good half day on the road (about 300 miles) and it could bring along a new set of problems - more urban areas/traffic for example - that could be just as bad, or even worse, depending upon what your specific concerns are.

If it were me, I'd take the I-40 over the I-10 any day. First off, as Michael pointed out, it's a LOT shorter. The terrain is much different -- and if you have to make the trip in mid-summer (you only say "in the next 6 months"), the I-10 is going to be a lot hotter for a longer period of time. With I-40, you get the chance to cool off between Kingman and Holbrook in Arizona, as the elevation is higher.

Along I-10, there are several cities that can have bad traffic, as previously brought up: Phoenix (which has several areas of construction), Tucson, and El Paso come to mind.
