  1. Default Spring/Summer 2014 - SF - Grand Canyon - New Orleans - Philly - NY

    Hi all,

My wife and I have been thinking about a road trip across the US ever since our first visit to New York about 10 years ago. We lived in the UK then, although we now live in New Zealand!

We are wanting to go cross country (1 way is fine), starting in San Francisco, heading to the Grand Canyon. We're not too bothered about Vegas. Then heading to New Orleans, and continuing up the East Coast to Philadelphia, and hopefully finishing in New York

Would you think 3 weeks would be enough to not be too pushed for time or having to do too much driving? We'd like to do a little exploring around, but we are also city lovers - we like to see something of the 'destination' cities too.

Hope I've not been too odd with my description!

We did SF to NY and made a rough plan of what we wanted to do before we started, then on a day by day basis fine tuned it although we booked the car rental from SF with a NY drop off online about 2 months before we went.

You should make sure you have a GPS as this can save a lot of time when trying to get to pre decided destinations such as a hotel booked from the day before if that is what you do.

3 weeks might make things a little tight if you want to spend some time in the cities but then again depends on how long you want to spend in the cities and how much time you want to spend in the Grand Canyon etc., we did our trip from May 6th to June 1st but we spent 3 days in SF, 2 in New Orleans and 5 in NY with several overnight/day stays along the way. We found that although there are some low speed restrictions on the highways you could still cover distances such as 500 miles in one day, more if you share the driving so if you did start to run out of time you can make a couple of longer jaunts towards the end of the trip to catch up.

Anyway.... This is a day by day record of a trip we made from SF to NY 6 years ago, we did the trip but spent a night in Las Vegas. We spent some days covering small distances and days covering a lot of miles depending on rough calculations of what we could do time wise and what we wanted to try and do along the rest of the trip. It should hopefully give you some pointers and things to do as well as help. In all honesty we felt we spend sufficient time in many of the places for what we wanted although I would do the trip again to spend time doing other things and some of the same again, would love to spend more time in San Francisco area and along the California coast 'hopefully another trip' as well as more time in the Philly and New York areas. There are also some costings (although probably out of date on the gas side) and maps of the route we took:

    Default Time enough.

Hello and welcome to the RTA forums !

Three weeks is certainly enough time to make the trip and enjoy some sights but you will have to work out where you want to prioritise your time. As a ball park figure it will take you about a week of drivng for 9-10 hours a day and 2 weeks to explore the sights, divided up to however you want of course.

As mentioned above, a GPS can be a handy tool for finding your way around the City and finding a Hotel address etc, but make sure you carry good old fashion paper maps for the detail and to ensure you go where you want to go.

You will find lots of tips and info just browsing around the RTA site, in the tool bar above for example you will find the RTA Map Centre where you can create routes and find attractions along them. Be sure to ask if you have other questions.

Thanks for the replies so far!
As this is likely to be next year, we are currently only looking at the broad picture to see whether we can do what we want to do in the time we're likely to get off work!

It's good to know that it looks feasible, now we need to drill down a bit more and look at what we want to do along the way :)

OK so we were thinking something like this:

SF - Grand Canyon - Monument Valley - Albuquerque - Santa Fe (as it's just off the main route) - Amarillo - Dallas -
Baton Rouge - New Orleans - Atlanta - Charlotte - Washington - Philly - New York

Is there anything along that route that looks out of place, or anywhere close to where we're going that we've really overlooked?

We are really looking for the oddball kind of stuff - the kind of things you won't find everywhere - if that makes sense
