  1. Default Salt Lake City to Mt Rushmore w/ 3 teenagers OH MY!

We are trying to plan a trip from Salt Lake City to Mt Rushmore this coming June. We have never taken this trip. Trying to decide if we should camp or hotel it. (not everyone likes camping....ME!) but trying be cost effective. Dont want the kids to be bored out of their minds. Any suggestions.

    Default Family decision.

Hello and welcome to the RTA forums !

Boredom is just a state of mind, so I would encourage you to ask the Kids for their input and help with the planning. If they do their own research and planning and you sit down as a family to discuss things, they will have a vested interest in whats happening rather than the teenage 'being dragged along' mindset.

In other words we really can't answer your question, you will need to sort it out as a family unit. With 5 of you travelling, and if you feel you would need [at least] 2 hotel rooms, an RV would be an option. It couldn't really be described as 'cost effective' though, not by the time you add on high fuel costs and campground fees, and especially if you have your own vehicle with no rental costs included, but it's an option somewhere in between using hotels and putting up a tent.

The choice between camping and hotels is really only one you can make. Certainly, camping is going to be cheaper, but if you don't enjoy it, then it's probably not worth the savings. Dave mentioned an RV as something in the middle. You could also look at staying in cabins, which are an option at some campgrounds, including Custer State Park near Mt. Rushmore. Going with a Cabin is likely going to be cheaper than an RV, but similar in cost to a motel, but it would allow many of the advantages of camping, like easy access to the outdoors and being able to cook your own meals, while still being able to sleep on a bed.

How much time are you planning for this trip? There's a ton of stuff to do in the Black Hills area beyond Mount Rushmore that could easily fill up a family vacation.
