    Default Steamboat to Denver

After spring skiing in Steamboat first week of April 2013, we want to head to Denver, preferably driving 34 to Fort Collins then heading south through Boulder to spend 4 days in Denver. Is the 34 open in Spring, and if not, what is our better option?

    Welcome!

No, 34 through RMNP will not be open yet unless there is a record light winter. The earliest it's usually open is mid-May.

The recommended route is US-40 to Kremmling, then CO-9 to I-70. If you want to stay on US-40 to I-70, Berthoud Pass *should* be open, it's maintained year-round. CO-14 from US-40 to Fort Collins also *should* be open. You will need to check on conditions at the time, cotrip.org is the best website for this.

Hi Jude and welcome back. How did your last trip turn out ?

As glc mentioned the Trail Ridge road is unlikely to be open when you travel. If you want to include Fort Collins then CO14 would be your best bet if conditions were OK. If Fort C wasn't a priority you could get on I70 and then take exit 243 [Central City Parkway] to CO119 through Nederland and along 'Boulder Canyon Drive' to Boulder which is quite a scenic drive. You might also want to consider heading to Estes Park and the Bear Lake area of RMNP.

Brilliant, thanks glc and Southwest Dave ! Last trip was awesome thanks, and the advice given here was fabulous. Funny in fact that I read some of the posts of people trying to see the RNP's in one day and think....oh, if only they knew !!! We have 7 or 8 days to see and do things around Denver, Boulder, Estes etc so happy to take suggestions.

US 40 from Salt Lake City to Steamboat Springs shouldn't be a problem at beginning of April, should it? Is it a worth staying a night in Vernal to see the Dinosaur Museum ?

    Default Don't miss Strawberry!

If you like hot water, you really need to check out Strawberry Canyon one of the days you're in the Steamboat vicinity. Here's a field report from there.

    Default South of.

South of Denver you will find quite a few attractions, one of the most famous being Pikes Peak. In Manitou Springs you will find the lovely 'Garden of the Gods' and 'Manitou Cliff dwellings' with Cave of the Winds nearby. A little further south you wll find Seven Falls and if you ventured further south, the Royal Gorge Bridge near Canon City.

It's maintained year round, but you will have to check conditions because anything is possible.
