Default December Phoenix GC Vegas LA San Francisco

First time road tripper, travelling from South Africa to Phoenix. Family two kids 11 and 15, enjoy nature, photography, planning trip from phoenix to San Francisco via Grand Canyon, Vegas and LA in December. See planned itenary below. Any tips and maybe a different starting and end point? Land late on 18 Dec. Is it the wrong time of the year to do this trip? Will it be better to do a trip from Orlando around the South East in Dec? Have done the Disney and other parks in 2008. Will be ending trip with 5 days in New York.

    Welcome to the RTA Forum!

I think you've got a very good plan laid out.

The time of year should be fine. You do have a chance of seeing some winter weather between Phoenix and at the Grand Canyon, because of the elevation, but that shouldn't stop you from taking the trip.

The only other big thing is that it will likely be a very busy time, because of people traveling over the christmas and new years holidays. You might want to make hotel reservations in advance for this trip.

    Default Relax!

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

In general, you've left yourselves plenty of time to enjoy this trip in a leisurely manner, so relax and do so. You've got a great outline for a RoadTrip through a popular area. I would suggest that you stop thinking in terms of hours and minutes between locations and start thinking in terms of days, and then looking at what's available on the way besides the most direct motorway. A great example is your drive from Phoenix to the Grand Canyon. Rather than just drive straight up I-17 to Flagstaff, take the time to go up through at least some of the following: Jerome, Cottonwood, Sedona, and Oak Creek Canyon. One thing you will want to do, though is to still manage to get to the canyon in time for sunset, and to be up early for sunrise the next morning. There are similar opportunities throughout your trip, so leave time for things besides the so-called highlights.

Thanks for the info, maybe I'll cut back on the time in the cities and visit more of the smaller towns.

The only suggestion I have is look at rearranging the direction and order of the trip so you go between LA and SF southbound instead of northbound. That way, the scenic pullouts will be on your side of the road.

You should also add 20% to the computer-predicted drive times, and a lot more for the stretch of CA-1, it's quite slow going. There's no way you can drive between Morro Bay and Carmel in only 2.5 hours even without any stops.

great idea, I forgot about driving the right hand side of the road, I'll change flight to fly in to San Francisco and fly out to NY from Phoenix, After the long flights it also makes sense to have shorter trips the first couple of days, thanks
