  1. Default Bishop, CA to Las Vegas in early October 2012

    Hi all,

I am new here and this is my 1st post.

I'd searched the possible route for the above from Google and would like to seek the advice from here.

    From Bishop to Las Vegas
    Route 1
    Veterans Memorial Hwy - 270 mile, 4h57m
    Use CA168 + NV266 + US95

    Route 2
    Use US395 + CA190 + US95 - 308 mile, 5h18min

If I want to pass through and see a little bit of Death Valley NP, is it I must take "Route 2"?

Any town in Death Valley NP suggestion to stop by for lunch/quick sight seeing?

    Many thanks.

    Welcome!

Take US-395 south to Lone Pine, then CA-136 to CA-190 into Death Valley.

Depart Death Valley east on CA-190 to Death Valley Junction. Turn right on CA-127, then an immediate left on Stateline Road. Follow that into Pahrump, turn right on NV-160 to Las Vegas.

This is 285 miles, and real world drive time (not a computer estimate) is about 6 hours, plus whatever time you want to spend sightseeing in Death Valley. Be prepared for 100+ F heat!

The official National Park Service site for Death Valley has park maps and information.

There are "restaurants" in Furnace Creek, Stovepipe Wells, and Panamint Springs. I recommend you leave Bishop with a full gas tank, fuel in the park is VERY expensive.

    Thanks glc.

I got to leave early in Bishop in order to reach LV before dinner time.

So it still gonna be hot in Death Valley in Oct.

Average high temperatures in October in DV are 93F, record high is 113F. If this is early October, I'd expect 100.

As I said, you are looking at about a 6 hour drive plus sightseeing delays. You shouldn't have to leave Bishop TOO early. Allow 3 hours to get from Furnace Creek to LV, it could probably be done in less.

Actually I am still finalizing the trip plan. My thought is to limit the driving to less than 5 hours a day. Is this is the case, can you suggest other place to stay overnight rather than Bishop? My initial plan is:

Day 0 (Thursday)Arrive SFO in afternoon and stay in SF, pickup rental car
Day 1 SF (leave morning) - Yosemite, stay in valley
Day 2 Yosemite - stay inside valley if possible
Day 3 Yosemite - stay outside valley, but no clue where yet
Day 4 Yosemite - Lone Pine
Day 5 Lone Pine -Las Vegas
Day 6 LV (leave morning) - Zion
    Day 7 Zion
Day 8 Zion (leave afternoon) - LV
Day 9 LV (leave late afternoon) - LA - by plane

It seems Bishop got more hotels so I change Lone Pine to Bishop.

I don't think the Bishop-DV-Vegas day would really be too hard for you, even though it is a bit more than your 5 hour plan.

If you're planning to stay outside of the Yosemite Valley after day 3, then perhaps day 3 is when you'd want to cross Tioga Pass, and then spend the night west of the park in Lee Vining or the Mammoth area.

Day 4 could be spent exploring the Mammoth Lakes area and you could head down to Lone Pine or even spend the night in Death Valley.

Have you considered stopping at Grand Canyon? It wouldn't be much of a detour, and could reasonably fit into your plans.

Thanks Michael for the advice. I'd been to Grand Canyon before so I'll pass this time. Yes I plan to cross Tiago Pass on Day 3.

I need some time to figure out what to do in Yosemite.
