  1. Default From Las Vegas to Memphis to Miami

    Hi all,

we are planning a read trip. We will arrive in Las Vegas on the 1th op September. We will pick up our car on the 3th. On the 27th we will fly back to Amsterdam from Miami.

    So far we have:
    Day 1 - Las Vegas
    Day 2 - Las Vegas
Day 3 - picking up car in Las Vegas
    Day 25 - Miami
    Day 26 - Miami
    Day 27 - Miami

We definitely want to go to the Grand Canyon and Memphis.

Also we want to know is LA is worth the extra miles in this roadtrip? Or skip LA en spend more time between Vegas en Memphis?
We do not care where we sleep. Either campings, motels or hotels, we love it all.

I hope people have some great and special tips for this trip!

Default You've Got Room to Add, So Add

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

With three weeks for the RoadTrip portion of your trip, the extra day or so to get to Los Angeles (and back) is hardly worth mentioning, so by all means include L.A. in your plans if that's what you want What you should do in that case is to go to L.A. directly from Las Vegas and then hit the Grand Canyon after your visit to L.A. Adding Los Angeles lets you also add the Mojave National Preserve and maybe a visit to Lake Havasu City and the original London Bridge. But, before we can offer you more than the 'standard' suggestions for your trip, we would need to know what you consider "great and special tips". In other words, what are your interests and what are you hoping to get out of your holiday?

Thank you very much for your reply.

What we want is a vacation. So no 10 hours driving at once. Reason that we do not want to pre book the overnight stays, is because we want to decide at the spot if we want to stay an extra night.

We like to see nature wonders, beautiful city's and the beach (and the end). We are not people who can sit on the beach all day long. We like to see things, but in an easy going way. No rushing to get to Miami, thats the most important thing.

Days of big distance is not a problem, but off course not every day.

Thanks for the tip on LA!

    Default No Rush, Then

I find that when I'm in serious RoadTrip mode, where the trip is the thing, not the getting there, that I am very comfortable covering about 400 or so miles a day in a few 2-3 hour drives with a couple of 1-2 hour stops at interesting locations in between driving segments. So just a few of the many possible diversions on your route eastbound: The Grand Canyon, of course, but don't overlook the smaller national monuments in the area such as Wupatki, Sunset Crater and Walnut Canyon, Meteor Crater and Petrified National Forest, Petroglyph National Monument outside Albuquerque and Cadillac Ranch outside Amarillo, the Oklahoma City Memorial, and maybe a short detour to Hot Springs National Park near Little Rock. That will bring you to Memphis. If Graceland is your reason for going there, then two other sites should also be on your itinerary: Sun Studios in Memphis where Elvis got his start (as did Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins) and Tupelo MS where Elvis was born. US-78 from Memphis to Tupelo will also be your route of choice as it continues southeast to Birmingham, Then US-280 to Auburn (great college town) and Richland GA. Next up are some smaller roads through the Deep South: GA-520 and US-82 to Tifton GA, then it's back on the motorways, I-75, to head down into Florida, the beaches, and Miami. There are lots of other places both on and reasonably near to your basic route for you explore at your leisure, but those will make a great framework
