Hello All! I am a roadtrip newbie and excited to start planning! I am hoping to leave from Chicago and be gone for 10 days! I would like to do a great trip out west! Any and all help would be much appreciated!

I think your first step really needs to be to figure out what part of "the west" you want to see.
With 10 days, you've got countless options. You can really go almost anywhere, even theoretically the west coast - although I wouldn't recommend it, since you'd basically have to turn around the day after you arrived.
But really, getting an idea of what it is you want to see or do is about the first step, and from there you can start working on the details of things like routes, lodging, and attractions.

Michael is right -- you need to start with a better idea of where you want to go. "The West" could be anywhere in WA, OR or CA. It could also mean the Southwest, such as AZ/NM/NV/UT.
Get out a big map of the USA. Realize that a long day on the road will get you about 500-600 miles, no further. Chicago to LA, for instance, is about 2000 miles, or 4 long days on the road.
