Default July 2012 trip - Seattle > San Francisco > Seattle

    Hi Folks
I'm Lionel from Paris - France - With my wife and 2 sons - 11 & 24 yr - have planned a 4 weeks road trip between Seattle and SF. It's kinda "8" loop that you can see below.
We've made all the bookings and are now getting down into the nitty gritty. We are after nice day hikes, "must see" / "must do" spots, but also cool places and opportunities for us to meat people from over the atlantic ... which, btw, is the reason why I post on a US forum. We are also pretty much into music, and we like food , wine and cooking, so will also be after farmer's markets, wine makers (not necessarly from the most known places BTW ) ...

So, any comments, advice, suggestions or experience to share ... about this trip will be much appreciated. OK, now ... the trip :

Default Just the Odd Thing to Add

Bienvenue sur les forums de RoadTrip Amérique. Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

You've clearly done an amazingly thorough job of scouting out places to go and things to do that will make this trip your own adventure, so I only have a few things to add that you may want to try to fit in. Just north of Portland there is an island in the Columbia River, Sauvie Island, that offers a number of great walks along the river, in nature sanctuaries, and along beaches. And if you've forgotten your swim gear don't worry, most of the beaches are 'clothing optional'. The Oregon coast has a number of state parks all along it. Most offer wonderful hikes on forested cliffs overlooking the ocean. Be sure to take advantage of at least a couple.

On the northern California coast around Klamath/Orick, there are a few state parks that are worth looking into as well as Redwoods National Park. These are Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park, and Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park. Then, between San Francisco and Sacramento is the Napa Valley which is home to one of America's premier wine producing areas. There are both large commercial enterprises and small family vineyards, so be sure to spend some time researching what you'd like to do while in the region.

The drive from The Dalles to Portland through the Columbia River Gorge is very scenic, and if you stick as much as possible to the old US-30 route, today known as the Historic Columbia River Highway, there are at least half a dozen great little hikes to incredible waterfalls just south of the main river. And although you didn't mention it, I'm sure you plan to do at least some hiking in Olympic National Park, no?
