  1. Default trip from las vegas to San Francisco

I'm new on this forum. My family is planning a trip in June for one week. We are starting out in Las Vegas and would like to drive to Death Valley National Park, Yosemite National Park and then onto San Francisco. What are the highlights that we should not miss at both of these National Parks and how much time to do need? We plan on spending 2 days in Las Vegas and 2 days in San Francisco. Also does anyone have recommendations for hotels along the way?

    Default Tioga Pass.

Hello and welcome to the RTA forums !

With 3 days to get from LV to SF, I personally would be looking at staying in the Bishop area on night 1 and then entering Yosemite on the Tioga Pass. [CA120] and stay in, or around Yosemite to the west on night 2. That will give you a little more time to explore the park before continuing to SF. Tioga pass is a big part of the Yosemite adventure and you will want to allow time to stop and take in the views. You could tour the valley floor same day and head up to Glacier Point the following morning, which is a real highlight imo. You might also have time for a quick visit to the giant Sequoia trees in Mariposa Grove with an early[ish] start. If your budget can manage it, and there are lodgings still available, I would stay in the park, [Yosemite lodge at the Falls possibly] if not you will be looking at nearby towns of Mariposa, El Portal or down towards Oakhurst.

To Death Valley you could take the 'Locals route' to Pahrump and then the Bell Vista/ Ash Meadows/State Line road to Death valley junction and then across the park on 190. Zabriske Point, Furnace Creek, Badwater and the Sand Dunes near Stovepipe Wells are a few of the stops you could make on the way.

You don't mention when in June you will be travelling, but the earlier you travel the more risk that the Tioga pass will not yet be open due to winter snow accumulation. They haven't had much of the white stuff this year so there is a good chance it won't be a problem, but is something you should be aware of. Check the road status and if it is closed you would have to head south after DV and around the mountains via Lake Isabella/Bakersfield.

  3. Default Need some advice from Los Angeles to San Francisco via US1

Would like some advice as to where to stop on US1 driving from LA to San Francisco with 21 and 25 year olds. They do not want to stop at Hearst Castle or do more than 1 or 2 National Parks. Any recommendations?

Merged with previous discussion. Please do not start multiple threads about the same trip.

    Welcome to the RTA Forum!

Well, first off, there actually aren't any national parks along that section of CA-1 (US-1 is on the east coast, and US-101 is a highway that stays inland from the coast along much of this stretch). There are lots of state parks, like julia pfiffer burns state park, that are worth checking out.

However, the things you say you don't want to see are among the biggest reasons that people take the coast highway. There are certainly others, like the 17 mile drive and the aquarium in Monterey, and just the views from the road itself. Most of the towns along the way have the kinds of unique stores you'd expect in a very tourist heavy area.

But to me the question is if you don't want to do the most popular things, what kinds of things are you interested in?

Thank you for replying. We are planning on going to the Aquarium, they would like to do winery's, would like to stop at some beaches (don't know which to stop at), and Big Sur. We are planning on doing the drive in 2 days from LA to SF. Any other suggestions would be very welcome.

This is not the same trip. we changed our plans and decided to take a different route and itinerary.
