  1. Default Yet another tourist needing advice for round trip From San Francisco to Vegas.

We are travelling from the UK to San Francisco from 29th March to 11th April, Staying 3 nights in SF then picking a car up on The Sunday morning to begin our road trip. The only hard and fast rule is we are booked in Vegas for Friday & Saturday night, with a return flight to the UK from SF on the Wednesday 11th April afternoon. The rest of the trip is flexible. We would like to take in the sites of the following if possible:
    Lake Tahoe
    Yosemite National Park
    Death Valley
    Las Vegas ( booked 2nights)
    Grand Canyon
    Los Angeles ( 1 day)
With Coastal road between LA & SF

The concerns we have is whether the roads in the Lake Tahoe and Yosemite will be open to take advantage of the 6 days prior to Vegas, or should we reverse the trip. Decisions decsions... What are the best options with limited time we have, taking into account the weather. Your help will be much appreciated.

    Default Perhaps ?

Hello and welcome to the RTA forums !

What I would suggest is that you use the longer 6 day trip to Vegas heading down the coast and to the Grand canyon. It's going to take 2 days to take the coastal Highway between SF and LA and a full day to drive to the GC from LA. That wil give you a day in LA and a full day day [2 nights] at the GC before heading back to Vegas, possibly via a section of route 66 and the Hoover Dam. You will also have the advantage of the coast being on your side of the road heading South.

On the way back you could head across Death Valley and head north on 395 and find somewhere to stop the night, perhaps around Bishop or as far North as Lee Vining. [Mono lake] Monday you could head to Tahoe, but then it's going to get tight trying to fit in Yosemite [wonderful place] with a flight booked Weds pm. I would consider leaving Tahoe for another time and when you have gone through Death valley, instead head south towards Lake Isabella. You could then be in Yosemite on Monday and explore Tuesday. With a flight on Weds it might be best to start heading back to SF Tues pm to allow yourself time to drop the car and make check in with no panicking involved ! [Depending on time of flight]

You have to keep in mind that the mountain passes will be closed and north or south are your 2 options, CA120 [Tioga pass] into Yosemite will almost certainly not be an option.

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated and will certainly too reversing our route as suggested. Lake Tahoe looks to be a stretch so will have to drop this from our itinery( shame). Also we have been lucky enough to have already visited Hoover Dam, and whilst a spectcular sight, not high on our list of priorities to see on the road from GC to Vegas, are there any other suggestions? Viewing other peoples suggestions it all looks too wounderful and confusing as to know what would be best with the limied time we have.

    Thanks again for your suggestions.

Most of us are familiar with the need to choose where numberous options are available. None of us can see it all. That is why so many visit the same locations, time after time.... as you seem to be doing. No one here can tell you what is best for your limited time. That is something only you can decide.

Have you read through some of the roadtrip field reports?
