Default 3 x Aussie blokes in a RV from Chicago to Vegas (May / Jun 2012)

    G’day Forum.

We are three 40+ Australians planning our first RV trip.

Arriving in Chicago on 6 May from Sydney Australia, our only plan parameter thus far is to leave Chicago in a C30 on 10 May and drop off in Vegas early June 2012.

We would like to have some fun along the way – not necessarily side-show carnival (hurl ur tummy spinning stuff) but a laugh and a few social drinks making new friends along the way. We have 4500M to burn up in our lease so that should be plenty to get from point A to Z.

All Ex-Military and current law enforcement so can be trusted (well we are sport mad Aussies!), and understand we are possibly eligible for discounted stays at some RV parks.

Need ideas and suggestions from the forum. We are definitely not looking to do extended hiking trails treks ! We are more a helicopter view team !!!

    • Being sport minded would like to go to a baseball or football match along the way.
    • Car enthusiasts so the best auto museum to visit.
    • Music festivals (to dance like no-body watching).
    • Must partake in a Cajun cooking class down south.
    • RV park stays preferred where we can swim in either a river / creek or by the sea-side (Surf).

Your input is greatly appreciated in advance.

    Default Sounds great!

Hi, and Welcome to the The Great American RoadTrip Forum.

Sounds like you are going to have a great time. With 4500 miles you can choose to go almost anywhere, between A-Z. And even without hiking (I'm not into hiking either) do not overlook the great National Parks of Colorado and Utah.

The best thing I think you could do for starters, if you have not already done so, is to get a good wall sized map of the US. My preference is for the National Geographics for the detail it shows of parks, cities and roads. Mark on the map all the place which interest you, including those where the musea and festivals are (sorry, I can't help you with those). Soon you will see a route appear before you.

Someone will be along soon, I'm sure, to answer the rest of your questions.

Enjoy the planning, it is so much part of the trip.

I should have also mentioned... that it is always worth asking. They can only say no, and you'd be no worse off.

And make sure you guys all take your NRMA membership with you. It gives you access to tourist services from the AAA, including maps and campground directories, etc. Much like you get at NRMA, only free. As well as that, whenever you see a sign which offers discounts to AAA members, it is worth menitioning that you are a member of an organisation which has a reciprocal arrangement with AAA, and as such, you should get the discount too. Sometimes you do, sometimes you don't. But it is always worth asking.

    Lifey,

Thanks mate. Yes NRMA member so all good there. As you say its the local detail of those small American towns that are hosting a not to be missed "party" that we need the heads up with. Spring time during our trip so just hope its not like our summer here in sydney this year :( Good suggestion re the map thou bloke. Will pop one up in the garage and layer it with thumb-tacks and coloured string get the boys around for a BBQ and a few beers to discuss.

    Cheers -

Might be a good idea to do the 'discussing' before the beers come out. ;-)

    Default Coming along nicely

Looks good so far, but you may want to do a little tweaking....

As I see it, Day 19 is not going to work. Best you look at taking an extra day here, and break that journey in half.

With your interest in the Indy and Nascars, I am surprised that you did not include Daytona International Speedway - the home of Nascars. It would mean an extra day, but it may be something your party would find interesting. You could then take scenic route 40 to Ocala, pick up I-75 to I-10, and overnight near Tallahasee.

There is an RV park right by the strip in LV, which is often recommended by members on this forum. Can't seem to find it's name, but I'm sure someone will.... real soon.

As for route 66.... there is precious little left of it. The route was officially decommisioned decades ago, after most of it had been swallowed up by the Eisenhower Interstate System. Probably the most popular part remaining is in the Kingman Seligman area, though there are some interesting remnants to be found in Missouri, north of Joplin / Springfield.

When are you dropping off the RV... and where? In LA it is likely to be more of a liability than an asset.

    Default Cabin/RV Camping-KOA

Welcome to the forum and hope all goes well with your trip.
My first input is your RV overnight camping.
I know there are lots of RV center along the way differ on services. I found KOA camper the best (no connection with KOA whatso ever, i am just a customer of as others). They have chain of camping ground/RVsites all over US.
They may not be as good as Harvey Normal :-) in advertising but their services (ultra clean rest rooms, wi-fi, pool, jacuzzi, evening BBQ) facilities are ultimate. I can bet that you wont be dissappointed. You also get 10% discount per booking if you take KOA card (cost $20 and valid for 1 year). the website is www.koa.com. You can also check the camping rates/location online and book them, you also get a handbook of koa location throught US, so it also helps as a MAP. I remember I used it as a MAP a lot.
For a handy map along the way, get one from walmart $6.99 i think and it has almost all information and not bulky at all.

I also see that you will be covering or driving thru many national park and there is a fees for RV and entry in national park. Instead of paying at each and every park individual fees, you should buy an annual pass (for $80, valid for 1 year) which will cover all of you + RV so you dont need to worry about paying at every point.

Will add more suggestions sometime on weekend and hope you have a great trip. Hope Ricky Pointing and PUP carry on the form in ODI too, this Wade guy seems sharp though :-)

    cheers!

If you are visiting four or more NPs, then, as mentioned, the NP Pass is the only way to go. But note.... it is for entry only, and does not cover camp ground fees, which in NPs, even with hook up, are generally below commercial rates.

So tell me, if you are in Phoenix, how and where do you get to see or hear the cricket? I have never been able to find any radio or TV channel which covers it, when I am over there.
