  1. Default 10 Day Trip from San Diego to Napa Valley

Hi all! there are 4 of us flying from NY to California (July 2012) and when we fly into San Diego we want to stay a few days and drive up to San Fran, and on to Napa....and then fly home to NY out of Napa Wine Country area. Any suggestions on starting to plan this more thoroughly that may be helpful tips?! :) Thanks!!

    Default Very Generally

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

It's tough to answer such terse, general questions with anything but the most obvious, general answers, but you should be looking at Balboa Park, the Scripps Aquarium, and perhaps a harbor tour in San Diego; the Pacific Coast Highway, Hearst Castle, Carmel. Monterey and some of the Spanish Missions on the drive up to San Francisco; and Fisherman's Wharf, Alcatraz, and Point Reyes National Seashore in the San Francisco area.

    Welcome to RTA!

First thing I'd do, if this were me, is to get a good California road map and start pouring over it. What interests you? Scenic? Theme parks? History? Wine tasting tours? Or a little bit of all of the above? Things may jump out at you as you check out a map. San Diego is full of things to see and do that could take days (and how many are you planning to take total?). Yosemite and Sequoia, the Pacific Coast Highway (better done from north to south, but doable south to north), probably five or six theme parks in LA Mess-tropolis, Hearst Castle, and much more is available.

What airport are you planning to use to fly out of Napa?

Default SD, Monterey, Yosemite, Napa to SF ?

You will also find plenty of ideas by just poking around the RTA site a little. Just by scrolling down this page you will find 'Similar threads'.

A lot will depend on how "few" days you want to spend in SD as well as time spent in San Fran, a wonderful city. One possibility to include some of the things previously listed would be to make your way up the coast, perhaps to Cambria and then around Big Sur to Monterey and then cut inland to Yosemite. From Yosemite head to Napa and then finish your trip in SF with a trip over the Golden gate bridge. Flying out of SF will most likely be better value.

You will soon see your 10 days disappear though, so you will have to pick and choose based on appeal. Once you have figured that out, we can help you 'fine tune' your trip.
