  1. Default Philadelphia to Chicago for Xmas

This will be my first big road trip and I am a little nervous about winter driving. My grandfather's reaction to driving that close to the Great Lakes and the lake effect snow has got me to thinking that I should take I-70 instead of I-80. I'm heading out on the 22nd and back on the 28th so I suppose snow is a real possibility. Opinions?

Check the weather and road conditions just before you leave and try to keep abreast of them. Take the most direct route that has an acceptable forecast and conditions. Snow and ice removal is going to be the BEST on the toll roads. Take your time and make it a 2 day trip each way.

    Default But Also...

...keep in mind that the I-70 route through Indianapolis and up to Chicago on I-65 is only 60 miles or so longer than the more direct I-80 route and other than the stretch on the Pennsylvania Turnpike from Philly to New Stanton is toll free. Either way, I agree that you should plan on spending an overnight somewhere, enjoy a relaxing drive with time to get out of the car every so often, and arrive refreshed rather than frazzled.
