  1. Default Grand Canyon village to Springdale in Zion National Park in March

    Hey guys

We are a British couple visiting Vegas at the end of February/early March. We want to hire a car and go off or three days visiting the grand canyon south rim (understand the North is closed at that time) and then up to Springdale in Zion National Park. This route utilises highways 64 and 89.

Can anyone tell me if these routes are likely to be open at that time of year?

    Hope you can help

    Cheers Nath & Gill

Unless there are conditions which warrant the temporary closure, both AZ 64 and US 89 (and US 89 Alt) should both be open at that time. As you have already noted, the road from US 89 down to the North Rim is the one that would be closed.

    Default A Couple of Notes

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

The drive from Grand Canyon Village to Springdale is one of the most scenic in the world, and while it can get cold and snowy, the roads are kept open since they are the sole commercial thoroughfare in the area. On the way you will be driving by (assuming you use US-89) Glen Canyon/Lake Powell, Vermillion Cliffs, and Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park. Since the drive should only take 4-5 hours in good weather with dry roads, you'll have some tome to take some great hikes as well. One word of warning. Although the road from Mount Carmel Junction to Springdale is shown as a state highway (UT-9) on maps, the section that goes through the southern part of Zion is a national park road and you will be charged the park entrance fee ($20) to drive it, even if you are just going to Springdale. But it is a glorious road with a mile long tunnel (with windows) and a number of switchbacks as you descend into the canyon.

The switchbacks can be VERY icy - check on conditions before you attempt that route. The alternate would be either US-89 to Kanab and Alt-89 to Fredonia -OR- US-89 to south of Page and Alt-89 to Fredonia, then AZ-389/UT-59 to Hurricane and UT-9 to Springdale.

We went to Zion last March and discovered it can be gorgeous. The canyon walls are much more visible when the trees don't have leaves. Most of the hiking trails were open. We wished we had 24+ hours but had to move on to Salt Lake City for a family wedding.
