  1. Default Driving Solo from San Francisco to Vancouver BC

Hi all, new to the forum and got a question...

I'll be driving solo from San Francisco to Vancouver sometime next week. I'm on a budget and I need to get these as fast and as cheap as possible. I'll be driving my Toyota 4runner.

I know I should probably be taking I-5 and go straight up and it'll probably take me 14-16 hours?? I guess I'll be driving half of it, sleep somewhere and finish the other half?? My question is where?

I don't really want to take a far detour just to sleep and eat. Should I bring my sleeping bag and sleep in the car? Or is there a budget motel along the way (mid-way) that anyone can recommend??

    Thanks in advance!!!

Also, this will be my first road trip ever!

The closest thing I've done are 15 hour flights to Asia. Which aren't too bad...

But ANY suggestions or cautions would be extremely helpful!

    Default Get a room.

Hello and welcome to the RTA forums !

The journey will take all of 16 hours and that would be a perfect run with no delay, so probably more. You should look at stopping somewhere around Eugene OR, or you could possibly push on to Salem and shorten the next day. To get a good nights sleep you really should get a cheap Motel room just off the Interstate. It will give you chance to relax and get out of the car and more importantly, stop the temptation of continuing your drive when tired iof you get restless in the car. Take short, regular breaks to stretch the limbs, clear the mind and have refreshments, it will keep you alert.

Take a look at the RTA booking service to the top right of the page to compare Motel prices in the area.

    Have a good trip !

You may need to add some time for the border crossing - so I would try to make it to Salem if not Portland.

Salem has a few budget hotels in the $50 range.
