We are driving from Wasington to Chicago during two days and would like advice on the best route to follow as well as plces to stop. We thought about visiting the Amish country in Illinois before heading to Chicago. Advice and commentd will be more than welcome!

Default Somewhat Off the Beaten Path

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

Just some very general ideas: First, I'm unaware of the Amish community in Illinois, but there is a major concentration in Ohio around Millersburg. Second, I'd eschew the Turnpikes for a slightly more restful (and cheap) route following I-68 west from Hancock, MD, maybe using some of the historic old National Road (US-40 more or less) through Pennsylvania, and then roughly US-30 through Ohio and Indiana. That would be a generally more bucolic drive and take you by such sites as Fort Necessity, the Johnny Appleseed Heritage Center, as well as the zoo, science center and botanical conservatory in Fort Wayne.
