  1. Default San Diego to South Lake Tahoe with teenagrs

We are looking to travel from San Diego to South Lake Tahoe leaving SD on July 31 or Aug 1 to arrive and meet friends in Tahoe on Aug 3. Have driven a lot in US before and travelled I5 and US 101 before so we were thinking about US395. 2 Adults and 3 teens and an 11 year old. Any thoughts, ideas or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Default A little more information please

Hi, and Welcome to the Great America RoadTrip Forum.

Exactly what sort of ideas and recommendations are you looking for? You really have not given any indication, and that makes it difficult to know just what to recommend. If you could be a little more specific, we would be able to give information tailored to your requirements.

Other than that, you might like to check out some of the menus on the green navigation bar above - Attractions in the Routes & Sights tab, and the Map Centre in the Maps tab, where you can search for attractions along and near a given route.

You can drive from SD to SLT via I-15/US-395/CA-89 or NV-207/US-50 in one long day, so with more than one day you can definitely do some sightseeing. There are a lot of attractions along the way, so you are going to have to pick and choose.

What will you be driving, and will it be a rental?

    Default A few suggestions.

Although hot, you could take a detour into Death valley, some other options would include a drive on the scenic June lake loop road, Mono lake and if you are not in a rental car, you could visit Bodie ghost town. With 3 days you could cross the Sierra Nevada on Tioga pass [CA120] into Yosemite and back across the mountains on CA4 via the gold rush towns of Jamestown and Murphys. As above though, it will depend on your interests and how much driving you want to do. If it's a return journey with time to spare you could go up one side of the Sierra's and down the other selecting what appeals to you.

    Default A couple more suggestions....

Alabama Hills near Lone Pine; site of many Westerns (also "Tremors" and stand in for the Khyber Pass area in the classic "Gunga Din"). Dirt roads so definitely not for rentals and probably most fun with a 4WD (although high clearance not essential).

Alabama Hills (foreground) and Sierra Crest with Mt. Whitney (far distant peak to right of center, close peak to left of center is Lone Pine Peak)

Mammoth Lakes and Devils Postpile National Monument. Mammoth might be a good overnight, Bishop would be the other option.

Bodie for sure (with a non-rental):

    and Mono Lake for sure:

There is the Ancient Bristlecone Pines National Forest east of Lone Pine, as well. Once again, this isn't for rental cars if you'd really like to drive and see something besides the ones by the Visitor Center. (Rentals aren't allowed to go to some of the forests beyond there.)
