    Default CA to Mid-Missouri and return, 2010

    I just found our trip log from last summer's trip. Perhaps it will be helpful to someone trying to plan a similar trip this summer!

    Statistics:

    1837 mi from our house in CA to mid-Missouri via I-15 and I-70
    1891 mi from mid-Missouri to our home via I-70, I-35, I-40, I-17, I-10 and I-8

    4647 mi total on the car (3729 round trip plus 917 sightseeing)

    Expenses:

    $380. fuel (premium unleaded in most places, occasionally mid-grade)
    $109 sightseeing fuel
    $377 5 nights motel (all the rest were with family)
    $227 travel and layover day food

    Averages:

    Gas was $3.03 - 3.25 gal for premium at that time
    $75/night average for motel (okay, $49.10 was lowest, $102 was highest for 2 nights)
    $32/day food budget (2 meals - breakfast and dinner most days

    Budget:

    Gas = $3.10/gal at 22mpg (we averaged 26 mpg)
    Motel - $75/night
    Food = $60/Day

    For 2011, we have had to up the gasoline budget. OUCH!

    Out of curiosity, does your car specifically call for Premium Fuel? That's typically one place where you can save a few bucks. There are very few times where you'll get an advantage from Premium, and in the one time where I had a car that actually called for it, I really did not notice a difference in performance or fuel economy when I switched down to mid-grade or regular gas.

    Yes, absolutely it calls for premium. It is a Pontiac that is "supercharged". We've tried running it on mid-grade, and have had to lean on regular unleaded periodically. It hesitated more, and did not seem to have the same "get up and go". Hubby knew that the car required premium when we bought it - but back in 2002, gasoline was MUCH cheaper!

    That is exactly the response I noticed from my Subaru... which also recommends Premium.

    We've had two Subaru's in our family. Our first was a 1979 DL, and the other was a 1986, and I think it was also a DL. Loved them both, but Subaru was not negotiating as well as GM was at the time, so we bought the Pontiac after previous experience with a Pontiac TranSport.
