Thread: Yosemite roads

  1. Default Yosemite roads

We are staying in Arcata Ca next month to visit Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks...I really don't care for mountain roads with a lot of "driving along the edge" Hurricane Ridge in the Olympics scared me to death. How is hwy 41 at the southern entrance of Yosemite to the valley ? Also, curious about the road into the Giant Trees in Sequioa.
    Thank you.

    Default where?

    Welcome to the RTA Forum!

Arcata, California is located along the Northern California coast near Eureka, 500+ miles from Yosemite or Sequoia.

I'm hoping you just mistyped that?

All roads in Sequoia and Yosemite are mountain roads. However, they are well maintained, very safe, and have very low speed limits.

Thank you.... I'm learning with my fear of heights to have some idea where I'm going !!

If you just want to get to Yosemite Valley the least mountainous way would be Hwy 140 though Mariposa.

Driving on Hwy 41 from Madera, CA towards Yosemite Valley you at least hug the mountain side of the road instead of the cliff side but the curvy road with drop offs goes for quite a ways.

Heading southbound on Hwy 41, the edge of the road on the southbound side has a berm, or curb, built up. They do that for winter visitors whose vehicles may slip and slide on the road. It's a nice peace-of-mind for the summer traveler going south, as well.

I won't go into details, but we experienced the worthiness of that berm one April, way back when, and were thankful that the road-builders put them there!
