  1. Default Road trip from Salinas to Grand Canyon

My boyfriend and I are planning to take a road trip from central coast california down to los angeles, to las vegas and grand canyon. We plan to drive on a thursday afternoon down to LA stay until Sat Morning, then drive to Vegas and stay just for one night drive Sunday afternoon to Williams, Az. On Monday drive to Flagstaff visit for the day, drive to Sedona and two nights and one day and then finally drive to Grand Canyon on Wednesday. We don't know how long to stay in Grand Canyon we were thinking just doing a day thing and driving back home on thursday morning. What we mainly need help on is what to do in Williams, Flagstaff and Sedona. We heard those were the places to stop, but we don't exactly know why.

It seems to me that you might be doing a little unnecessary backtracking. Here's one approach:

Thursday: drive Salinas to LA (about 7 - 8 hours depending on which route)
    Friday: Sightsee in LA
Saturday: Drive to LV (5 hours)
Sunday: Drive LV to Grand Canyon
    Monday: See Grand Canyon
    Tuesday: Sedona
Wednesday and Thursday: Drive home (that's a 14 hour trip back to Salinas)

Yet another approach, which would give you more time at the GC:

    Thursday: Salinas to LA
Saturday: LA to Grand Canyon (save LV for another trip)
    Sunday and Monday: Grand Canyon
    Tuesday: Sedona
    Weds/Thurs: Drive home

Williams is pretty well just a great place to use as a hub. If it were me, I'd stay in Williams on Saturday night, Tusayan on Sunday night, and then go back to Williams (before dark!) on Monday evening. Go to Sedona from Williams (day trip) on Tuesday, returning through Flagstaff.

Sedona has the Red Rock area, lots of beautiful antique and artistic type shops, beautiful scenery, expensive restaurants and resorts, Slide Rock State Park (nice on a hot day, but always jammed in the summer!).

Flagstaff - - - Humphrey's Peak, Sunset Crater, and (if you like theater) there is Black Bart's Steak House and Theater. One of these days I'm going to get there - my parents just love that place, and stop in Flagstaff purposely just to go there.
