    Default Toronto to New York

    Hi all...

I have a buddy who is planning a trip this year in September, but is stuck on how to get from Toronto to New York. A one way hire car is waay to expensive. They want to go to Niagra falls then head on to New York City. Can someone suggest a way of doing this whether by car/rail, combination of both? Maybe rail to Buffalo, then hire car drop off in NYC? Im just guessing here...

    Thanks CC OZ

That's what I was going to suggest, even rent a car to Niagara, take the bus across the bridge and rent a car on the US side, to NYC. That should work. Renting in Canada and dropping in the US is horrendously expensive - when permissable.

    Default Bus and Rail

Both buses and trains are available for the journey, each with it's advantages. Busses will be cheaper and probably operate more frequently, but trains offer faster service and the ability to get up and walk around while in transit. In Canada, service between Toronto and Niagara Falls is offered by VIA, while in the United States, service between Buffalo and New York City is offered by Amtrak.

A bus based option worth looking at is Megabus. They're express buses, stopping only in major cities so they are faster than a greyhound-type service, and they can be very cheap if you book in advance. I've used them a few times, and found it to be a really good deal.

The downside is that while they stop in Toronto, Niagara Falls, Buffalo, and NY, they don't have service between Niagara and NY or even Niagara and Buffalo. You'd have to take a bus from Toronto to Niagara Falls, and then either backtrack to Toronto or find another method of transit (taxi/amtrak?) to Buffalo, and then could take a bus from there to NY.

How about maybe do a day trip to Niagra Falls via hire car, then back track to Toronto to pick up more suitable/accesible travel options to NYC? Does this make sense?

That would certainly work, although it is likely going to be more expensive than the bus or train options, and its also going to take a few extra hours with all the backtracking.

Niagara Falls is a pretty compact area and parking can be expensive, so it really is a case where having a car is not much of an advantage. If they were going to already have a car for part of the trip, I could see making the drive, but I wouldn't rent a car just to see the falls.
