  1. Default Las Vegas to Reno

We are coming over from the UK in September to visit Las Vegas and then drive to Reno for the last weekend of the air races. We plan to leave Vegas on Tuesday 13th and arrive in Reno on the evening of Friday 16th. We would like to see mountains and the big trees. Can you recommend a route that gives us the best of both?

With 4 days to play with, you would have time to go through Death Valley (optional), then around the south end of the Sierras, up into Sequoia/Kings Canyon, then to Yosemite and over Tioga Pass, then up to Reno (optionally via Lake Tahoe).

Take NV-160 west out of LV to Pahrump. At the north edge of town, turn left on Bell Vista Ave and take that to Death Valley Junction, make a right jog and take CA-190 into the park. Leave the park on CA-190 to US-395, turn left and go to CA-14 to CA-178. Turn right and take that into Lake Isabella. Turn right on CA-155 and take that to CA-65, turn right and take it to CA-198. (Optional to skip Death Valley - take I-15 out of LV to CA-58 to Bakersfield, CA-99 to Visalia, then CA-198). Turn right and go through Sequoia/Kings Canyon. This is the Generals Highway, where you can see the General Sherman tree. Leave the park on CA-180 to Fresno, go north on CA-41 to Yosemite. Take CA-120 over Tioga Pass to US-395, turn left and go to Reno. (Optional - turn left on CA-89 at Topaz and take that to US-50 into Tahoe. Take US-50 out and back to US-395).

There are a lot of options to space out the 3 overnights.

    Welcome to the RTA Forum!

If the "Big Trees" you are refering to are the Giant Sequoias, then you should know those trees are only in the mountains, specifically the west side of the Sierras.

One options you could consider is spending the 13th in Death Valley, spending the night around Lake Isabella. the 14th Driving to and through Sequoia NP, the 15th in Yosemite, and the 16th going over Tioga Pass and back to Reno.

That's one of many options, but it would certainly give you lots of "big trees and mountains' at a quick, but enjoyable pace.

That's brilliant, thanks. It fits with what I had been thinking of doing but had no idea whether what I was planning made sense, or whether it would involve so much driving we wouldn't get to see anything.
