This is a route I'd like drive some day. I'm not really much of a Civil War enthusiast, but your descriptions intrigue me nonetheless. Great route.

I have to say that I've never been that interested in Civil War sites either, but having some background about the campaign and then seeing where it took place was fascinating. There are some intriguing stories, too, about the campaign like the camel that was a mascot for a Missouri troop; its bones are buried in the Vicksburg City Cemetery (it was a Confederate camel!). General Grant's oldest son, Fred, came on the campaign and was shot in the foot. Lots of neat things when you dig in- plus the enormity of the campaign and loss of life.
