  1. Default Las vegas to Tahoe

We will be Traveling from Las Vegas to Lake Tahoe in July. Any suggestions as to which route to take that would be somewhat interesting. A family of 5 young adults. After Tahoe we will be traveling to San Fransisco. Any suggestions on this route as well. We like scenic routes and would like to stop off and see some local sites.

Any and all suggestions would be great.

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

I assume from your description and lack of any stopping points other than lake Tahoe, that you plan to make the drive from Las Vegas to Tahoe in one day. If that's the case, then your options are fairly limited. But you could, in a fairly long day, leave Las Vegas early and take NV-160 up to Parhump, then Belle Vista Ave and Ash Meadow Road into Death Valley National Park. Cross the park on CA-190 and use CA-136 to connect to US-395 north and follow that the rest of the way up to the lake. US-395 follows the lee side of the Sierra Nevada and is quite scenic, passing Mammoth Lakes, Mono Lake, and traversing a couple of National Forests.

From Tahoe to San Francisco, you'll probably want to follow US-50 and make a stop at the California state park that houses Sutter's Mill and the site of the beginning of the California Gold Rush.

Following Buck's routing suggestion, on 395 just before Topaz Lake, turn left on CA-89 and take that over Monitor Pass and Luther Pass to US-50 to get to South Lake Tahoe - if you are going there or to one of the western areas of the lake. If you are going to one of the eastern or northern areas, stay on 395 to US-50.

Either way, you are looking at 10+ hours on the road. If you want to spend any meaningful time sightseeing along the way, I'd suggest an overnight somewhere, Bishop has the best and least expensive selections.

If you are not driving a rental car, you may be interested in a stop at Bodie (ghost town). The last 3 miles or so of the road is unpaved and may not be driven in a rental.

  4. Default Las Vegas to Lake tahoe

I am taking the family on a trip to Las Vegas driving to Lake Tahoe and then on to San Fransisco the first week in July. Any suggestions on the most scenic routes with places to stop for local sightseeing.

Are there services on the route to Lake Tahoe or do we need to pack meals and drinks for the ride. And if we decided to stop and spend the night what would you recommend?

You will be passing many towns and services so you won't need to worry to much. It's always handy to have some snacks and refreshments in the vehicle though.

    Finding a comfortable room ? ;-0

I am not sure what you mean or where you are thinking of stopping. Do you mean on the way to Tahoe, or if you decide to stop in Tahoe ? You are not thinking of getting to SF same day via Tahoe, are you ?
