Default April and May, 2011 Tornado Information Thread

Current mapping for reported tornadoes on the ground and warning conditions

Jeff Master's Weather Blog tends to have the most current and accurate information which can be useful for planning trips in areas expected to be hit by severe weather. And here's a general post about whether or not tornadoes in the USA are getting stronger by year. The short answer? The data is not clear...

And to get an idea of what these super-storms can do... Click on this link and then grab the blue slider bar and move left to right to see what the before and after was on this neighborhood!

    Thumbs up Good idea.

Good links that will provide useful info for travellers!

The devastating consequences of the recent Tornadoes were widely reported here in the UK and no doubt worldwide, but even so that last link is very 'sobering'.

Default And that photo display wasn't.........

And that photo display wasn't even from the strongest storm. The tornado that hit Smithsville, Mississippi, was probably an EF-5 whereas the one with depicted in the photo contrast above was only an EF-4.

Actually I guess the NWS has now identified a second EF-5 tornado -- this one hit Hackleburg, Alabama during the same storm oubreak.

This is the best visual I've ever seen for depicting the incidence of tornadoes in Tornado Alley in the USA:

This shows storm tracks over the last decade or so -- with the red lines being the strongest.

That is an amazing map. I had no idea that tornadoes affect virtually half the country, albeit not everywhere, every year.

Default Actually, the only state without is Alaska

The lines are fainter, but every state in the USA has tornadoes -- except maybe Alaska. I've personally seen twisters in and handful of states. California had some doozies in January of 2009!

Default Live-Streaming right now in Oklahoma

Active E4 tornadoes on the ground right now. This station is using a helicopter to chase the storms and report the conditions.
