Default Help plan my trip: Detroit to Salem, Mass

OK, so my mom and I are going on a road trip. We were supposed to be bowling in Syracuse for the national tournament, but had problems with the rest of the team, so we're just gonna hit the road!

We're leaving Detroit on Saturday morning, April 16th and need to be back in Detroit area by Thursday morning (April 21st) or noon-ish.

She likes casinos, I like the weird stuff like ghost towns, etc. One MUST STOP place is Lily Dale, NY. It's a spiritulist community my mom has always wanted to check out! It's an hour and a half from Niagara Falls, southwest between Erie Pennsylvania and Buffalo, NY.

Leave Saturday morning - I was thinking of traveling through Canada (yes, we have passports) and stopping at a few casinos that I found and ending up in Niagara Falls to spend the night. Maybe hit the Criminal Hall of Fame, Hersey Store, etc.

Leave Sunday morning, travel down to Lily Dale and check it out since we're so close. Afterwards, start driving towards Boston, Mass. It's seven hours from Lily Dale. I don't see much in between to stop at, so I think that's possible. Arrive in Boston Sunday night.

Monday - Hang out in Boston and travel to Salem. Maybe spend the night in Salem

Tuesday - Leave Salem and Take I-90 to I-84 and head towards the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania

Wednesday - Leave by 8am and head towards the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2-3pm arrival) and hang out in Cleveland.

    Thursday morning, head home.

Does this sound possible? Any suggestions for alternate routes or places to stop and see? I need input please and appreciate all information!

Default It May Sound Better Than It Travels

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

That's a pretty full itinerary for only 5½ days. There's certainly nothing to prevent you from physically doing it, as it's only a little over 3 days of driving. But I can easily see that you think you're going to have more than two days worth of sight-seeing in addition. So something's got to give. You certainly don't want to be adding additional stops to this trip. The 'day' in Boston and Salem is a good example. Remember that you're going to be there on a Monday, and not just any Monday. That particular Monday is Patriot's Day. That's the day that the Boston Marathon is run followed by a Red Sox day game. It is NOT a day you want to be trying to drive around Boston (Best line I ever heard regarding asking for directions in Boston: "If anybody tells you 'go straight', forget it. They don't know what they're talking about!") and you particularly don't want to be trying to find parking, which on a good day can run $40-50. So, I'd leave that to another day and just do a relaxed walking tour of Salem.

Similarly, if you plan on going to Lily Dale, then just head there from Detroit around the south of Lake Erie. Doubling back from Niagara Falls just adds unnecessary miles. Besides, ending the day in Niagara makes more sense since that's presumably where the casinos are and it's that much closer to Salem. The one place where you can add a stop is on the first day of your return drive, and I think you might enjoy visiting Mark Twain's home in West Hartford, CT. As a bonus, Harriet Beecher Stowe's home is right next door. Both sites offer excellent docent-led tours.

Thanks AZ, after posting this, I figured out that the Monday we plan on being there is the Boston Marathon Monday.

I think I'll take your thoughts into consideration. Leave Detroit, hit the R&R Hall of Fame, then head towards Lily Dale. Then I'm not sure what to do. Head towards Niagara Falls and go back home through Canada and miss Salem, or do alot of driving to get to Salem?

Rethinking....... any and all ideas are welcome!!

    Default Spiritualism and Salem

The two do not necessarily go together. First, consider that present day Salem is not where the witch trials took place. Those events took place, by and large, in 'Salem Village' which today goes by the name Danvers. Danvers has many more historical buildings and sites actually from the time of the trials than present day Salem which has largely, due solely to its name, taken over the tourist trade. What you'll find in Salem now are wax museums, palm readers, 'haunted' houses and the like.

If, rather, you are looking for spiritualism, then western and central New York may actually make a better destination than a tourist site such as Salem. Besides Lily Dale, there is of course Chautauqua, Ontario County (the birthplace of Mormonism), New Lebanon (site of a Shaker Community on the National Register of Historic landmarks), Oneida (home of the Oneida Community Mansion House), and others. This area was home to a number of Utopian and Spiritualist communities in the era between the wars (1812 and Civil). It also is home to the Women's Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls as well as a number of just plain scenic venues in the Finger Lakes such as Watkins Glen and Letchworth State Parks.

Thanks AZ. I love the weird stuff like wax museums, plam readers and haunted houses, that's why we we're going to Salem.

My mom is the one that wants/has to stop at Lily Dale. She's heard about it, read about it, and seen stuff on tv about it, so she wants to stop.

Now I;m thinking of leaving Detroit, going to the R&R Hall of Fam and Lily Dale, then heading towards Niagara Falls. We'll do both US & Canadian sides and come home through Canada. We'll save Salem for another day, maybe in the Fall head out that way.
