  1. Default Looking to take a Norh East Coast trip Boston to Philly

Im looking to drive to Boston from Philly and work my way back home down the coast. Im not sure where the must see sights are up North. I have been south over the years, Oc Md, Wildwood NJ Outer Banks Ect. I never went North above Seaside Heights NJ along the coast. I figured I would trave up to six days on the road. I will be traveling with my wife and two teenage boys. We love the ocean and would love to check out the coast from Boston down to New York. Spending a day or two in NewYork would be nice. I nevered seen Lady Liberty or several sights in NY. Any help plotting a route down the coast and places I should stop to see.

If you are beach people, I'd look at spending at least a couple days out on Cape Cod.

Default The Southern New England Coast

The main thing you should be aware of is that the coast of New England southwest of about New Haven, CT is heavily populated and industrial/commercial. You should plan on getting any scenic and restful sight seeing in well before you reach that point on your drive home. Cape Cod is the obvious destination, particularly the Cape Cod National Seashore and Provincetown. You should also think about taking a day trip by ferry out to Martha's Vineyard from Wood's Hole. Leave the car on the mainland and rent bikes on the island. In Rhode Island a visit to the 'cottages' of Newport is in order, and perhaps another or different offshore trip to Block Island. Working your way west along the coast of Connecticut, two spots stand out. The first is Mystic, home to Mystic Seaport and, yes, there really is a Mystic Pizza but Abbott's Lobster Pound is the place to eat. The second is New London, home to the Submarine Force Museum. Nearby, but a bit inland, is the Mashantucket Pequot Reservation, which boasts a very large casino as well as an excellent museum on tribal history. There are a couple more coastal state parks before you get to New Haven for one last look at some coast before you hit New Haven: Rocky Neck State Park and Hammonasset State Park. Both are easily accessible from I-95 and should be clearly signed.

The boys might also enjoy visiting Battleship Cove in Fall River, Mass. The USS Massachusetts (a battleship) as well as the USS Lionfish (a sub) and other ships are open for touring.

US 1 along the Connecticut coastline from Massachusetts to New Haven is generally thru small towns with village greens, etc. Abbott's (above) is on US-1 near Noank. If meal time gets you near Old Saybrook consider "Dock and Dine", a pleasant seafood place on the waterfront. Or, going west as you approach Clinton on US-1 there is "Bill's" which is popular with eating on the deck. Also, very popular in Madison and Westbrook is Fish Tale.

As a point of information, except for the two state parks there is virtually no public beach in CT. Many of the town beaches are overpriced to exclude out-of towners.
