    Default Renting a convertible

    Hi!

We just booked a trip with my sister to fly to NYC and travel by rental car to Miami.

I just have one problem - I cant find any rental convertibles anywhere! I tried all the major rental agencies, Hertz, Avis, Budget... But they dont offer convertibles at all.

Any clues? Or dont they give them out for one way rental?

    Thanks in advance!

    Welcome to the RTA Forum!

I looked around and found the same problem as you. It appears to be a New York thing, not a one way issue, because doing a quick search, I couldn't find any convertibles available even for a round trip rental in ny.

If you've got your heart set on a convertible, it looks like you might have to reverse your trip, and drive from Miami to NY. I found them available for that trip with no problems.

You could also call the rental car companies directly and/or contact a travel agent. At least they might be able to tell you why they aren't available in NY, or if there might be cases where they are available.

If you have the money for TWO one-way fee rentals, and if your hearts are set on driving a convertible, couldn't you drive to the closest city along your way and switch cars there? Maybe if it was from the same rental agency, they could give you a break on the two one-way fees in the car switch? Ain't going to be cheap.

The thing to consider in your quest for a convertible is the limited luggage space available. From your opening post it sounds like you are a party of at least 3 people and it could be a squueze.

Have you checked in the surrounding NYC area for convertibles, such as maybe Newark Airport? Another option is take the train to Philadelphia, Baltimore, or Washington DC and rent the car there.

    SECOND SOUTHWEST DAVE!

People who don't own convertibles don't realize how much trunk space is sacrificed for top storage when the top is down. Make sure you're traveling luggage-light if you rent a convertible. That said, it's a great option:

Only one suitcase in this baby. Maybe two in a Mustang.

Not only that, but the back seat in them is a joke. Not suitable for adults.

My bad. That's what happens when you use the back button in the middle of an edit.

Anyway, the bit missing from the extraneous post is if you go with a convertible, you should use soft-sided luggage, and more small bags than few large ones.

And yeah, back seat can be small. I had a Sebring convertible once; rear seat was OK for the kids. I think the Mustang rear seats are a little more confined.

    Thanks for the responses!

I am travelling only with my sister so luggage space is no problem. Usually in convertibles you can put couple of small bags in back seats and some more in the trunk so shouldn't be a problem :)

I need to contact a rental agency straight and ask them about cars nearby NYC. Cant change the direction of the trip anymore as the flight tickets have been booked already.

    Thanks everybody! :)

    Default report back

Good luck. Please report back and share what you find out.

Based on a quick look, I couldn't find them available anywhere near NYC - including looking in Jersey and even PA. Hopefully they'll at least tell you why they aren't available (or don't appear to be at least).
