  1. Default San Francisco - Trips in & Around the area

We are planning a trip to San Francisco in Aug or Sep. We'll be flying to San Francisco and renting a car. We'll have 10 days total. Would like some suggestions of good short trips to take from San Francisco. We are interested in visiting Sonoma area and perhaps north of SF. We are from Ohio and have never been to California. Also would like to know if it would be worth getting a convertible style car? I know that is a preference but don't know what the weather is like generally speaking. Any tips, suggestions greatly appreciated.

Hello and welcome to the RTA forums !

When you say "short trips" are you going to be spending every night in San Fran or some nights away from the City ?

The weather [as we all know] is totally unpredictable and in San Fran more so than most but I am sure you will find plenty if opportunity to get the top off a convertible. Worth the extra money ? That's your decision to make but it could be fun ! You could consider not having a car for all your trip as the City is very compact and easy to get around without one, plus parking in the City can be expensive. Check your Hotel policy as well as they can charge quite a bit to use the parking lot even though you are guests.

September can actually be a better Month in San Fran offering similar Temps but less fog than August and possibly fewer visitors{?] but with the weather there is never any guarantees.

As well as the Napa valley region to the North there is Point Reyes National seashore, Bodega bay,'Old Faithful' of Calistoga, Golden Gate Rec area and many small State parks. To the South, Monterey, Big Sur, Big basin Redwood State park plus many more. In SF some of the main attractions are Union Square and China town for shopping, Coit tower, Fishermans Wharf and Pier 39 and of course riding the cable cars. No trip is complete without a trip to Alcatraz and I would recommend you book that in advance and unless you want to be tied into other tours, this is best done directly with the NPS here.

You can also get day tours to Yosemite NP but I would definitely recommend making your own way and spend a night in the area to explore this absolute 'Gem' of a National park.

We are not tied to staying in SF the entire trip. We actually thought about staying in SF for several nights and then getting the rental and driving, staying wherever we decided to stop. Thank You for the information you've given us some things to start thinking about.
