  1. Default South USA - campervan hire

We are planning a long road trip around the south of USA from 7th july-8th sept.

We don't want to spend thousands and we just need it to sleep 2 people in. We don't mind having one of those really small vans with just beds and a sink/cooker in - can't seem to find many of these though.

We would appreciate a point in the direction of where to look!

    Thanks

    Default A start.

Hello and welcome to the RTA forums !

Smaller Euro type camper vans are quite rare in the US and as such usually demand a premium rental fee. There are a few Company's that specialise in them but you would need to search the area "around South" you are thinking of starting from. Away from conversion vans and Euro campers such as the VW, you would be looking at a class 'B' RV or a compact class 'C' like this one from Cruise America.

There is a West coast company called "Lost campers" you could check out but I am fairly sure they only operate from California.

Great, thanks for your help. I was also wondering about parking up at night - do you have to specifically park in camping areas and if so is there a fee to do this?

Default You need permission or a designated area.

You can use truck stops and with the managers consent some stores such as Walmart may allow you to park in a quiet corner but the protocol would be to give them a little custom. You can't get out your table and chairs and 'set up camp', it's purely a place to sleep.
You can find some free sites to camp but you can't just pull up on the side of a road or in somebody's field and set up camp, you would be trespassing or in breach of by laws and could face a rude awakening.

State parks, National parks and Forestry sites can offer good value camping for $10 to $20 a night in a lot of cases.

In the black tool bar above you will find a link to "RV info" where you will find all sorts of tips and info.
