  1. Default South Eastern States Road Trip

    Hi,

We are in the early stages of planning our summer 2011 US road trip. Will have about two weeks, and will be flying in and out of Atlanta.

Our initial thoughts are leaving Atlanta after 1 night, and then on to Chattanooga, Nashville, Memphis, and then a leisurely(?) drive over to Charleston and Savannah via Birmingam. Then back to Atlanta to fly home. All in about 1500 miles. Does this seem practical? It's just the two of us and we are happy with two or three hours driving each day. Quite happy with plenty of 1 night stays, with 2 nights where appropriate. The core idea of this road trip is visiting Memphis (for Graceland) and Charleston. Grateful for any advice/comments.

    Thanks.

    Default Welcome!

Welcome to the RoadTrip America Forum!

Two weeks is plenty of time to travel this section of the country. As for advice - what other types of things interest you?

Default Some Possible Sites to Include

There are more than a few interesting destinations on a loop trip through this area, but here are some that I think merit your further consideration: Take US-64 across southern Tennessee and stop at Shiloh National Battlefield; from Memphis use US-78 east and stop at Elvis' birthplace in Tupelo; FDR's Little White House in Warm Springs, and the Andersonville Prison National Historic Site as you work your way across Georgia to Savannah; in Charleston: the plantations along River Road, Fort Sumter in the Harbor, and if it's open the CSS Hunley restoration.

Thank you for your helpful suggestions.

Our interests are varied. We like to visit a few attractions (historical sites etc) and are always happy to go on a few gentle hikes and wander around your prettier towns. Most of all we love to just drive around and take in the beautiful and diverse scenery your country has to offer. We will still have some valid NPS "America the beautiful" passes on this trip so we will be keen to visit any local national parks.

One further question. I gather your schools close for summer mid June. Will this make a big difference to our trip in terms of traffic and attraction visitors? Also, will it bump up the hotel prices? We don't have a big budget for this holiday!

    Thanks.

    Default Earlier Would be Better

Schools in America are all run locally, so there is no single date for when they close in the Spring. Some will finish up in mid to late May, but most, if not all are done for the year by mid June. Another consideration is weather. The South can be quite warm and humid. If you are not used to such 'muggy' conditions, they can prove quite physically and emotionally draining. For both those reasons, I would suggest that you push your trip up as far into May as you can. You can get an idea of when the summer travel/tourist season begins in any given area by seeing when the rates for motels and other accommodations change. Even if you don't plan to stay in such places, looking at rental prices for private homes ('vacation rentals') are perhaps the most sensitive to such seasonal price fluctuations.
