    Default planning our winter drive

    Hi everybody

Starting to plan our New Years trip. Another 9 day'er. I know it's winter, but, can anybody tell me if the route i have mapped around Rocky Mountain NP will work this time of year? I realize if it snows it probably won't, but if theres no snow in the forecast, are these roads open in the winter?
The 2800+ miles won't bother us....last spring we did 3500 miles Duluth-Glacier-Yellowstone-Tetons and back home....that was in our motorhome, and this trip we'll be driving my 4wd Chev pickup.

    thanks!!

The route should work +/- road closures for storms.

Hwy 14 west of Ft. Collins is very pretty. 35 mph limit in many places. 2 lane and goes over Cameron Pass at 10,300' There is occasionally avalanche control required on the west side with closures as they do it. But at least the road is open most of the winter. (unlike US36 that goes over the top of RMNP )

The rest of the route is even more major roads and they try to keep them open all winter.

    Have a nice trip!

    Welcome!

I see that you have 4wd, but I'd recommend that you also carry chains. The mountain states do have chain laws in adverse conditions. One pair for the rear axle is sufficient.

Thanks for the ideas fellas.....anything in that area that should not be missed? We're thinking we might stop at the Hot Sulfur Springs Resort for a soak, thats about all we have planned so far.

Sorry I can't help much. I've done my exploring of those parts during Summer and Fall. Great hiking and 4 wheeling to be found. But you're going during snowmobile season.
