  1. Default Michigan to California in December. Advise needed. Thank you.

    Hi all,
    I'm new to the forum.
My girlfriend is transferring from UMich to Stanford in late December. We are thinking of a road trip since she has lots of stuff. But I heard that traveling in the winter could be annoying, especially driving in the snow. Could any one give me any suggestion if we should go for it, or take an airplane instead? Thank you very much for your help. We really appreciate it for your advise.

Hello and welcome to the RTA forums !

It's tough to avoid winter weather conditions in December, so it will come down to how "annoying" you find it, and if you have the time to drive the route. The Interstate system has to keep the country moving all year round, and is a priority to keep clear and open. You could see a winter storm that is severe enough where the best course of action would be to pull up for a few hours and let it pass, while road crews do their job of clearing the road. How annoying is that ? Only you can decide what's going to be best for yourselves, but being a Roadtrip forum, full of people that love the open road, well you know the rest ! ;-)

Thank you for your reply. I guess I have to deal with the snow. Could you suggest me some route that I should take to avoid snow as much as possible, while still having a good view along the road. My current plan is to simply follow the route suggested by google map, but is there a better route for this trip?

    Default Impossible.

    I am afraid not.

Nobody can predict the weather this far in advance, and it doesn't matter how far you travel out of your way, there is no way to guarantee that you won't hit winter weather. Getting up to date weather info before you leave may help you decide, but the most direct route [therefor quickest route], will have you on the road for the shortest period of time and as such, reduce the odds slightly of running into a storm. In your case it looks as though I 80 is the more direct route and taking into consideration the time of year, would recommend allowing 5 day's for the journey.
