  1. Default Central CA to OK mid September- need things to do along the way!

    Hi Everyone!
My husband and I will be traveling from Central California to Elk City, Oklahoma. We will be leaving sometime Friday, September 17th and returning Sunday, September 26th. We plan on visiting the Grand Canyon along the way, but are curious as to what other fun/neat things to see or do on the way there and back. We are going to visit family for 2-3 days sometime that week but are leaving the rest of the time to explore. Any suggestions??

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

Well, first of all, it's a bit hard to determine how much time you need to be on the road, since I don't know where you're starting from. "Central California" covers an area of roughly 50,000 square miles, but using Sacramento for calculation purposes, you'd need to set aside three days for the drive to Elk City, three days for family there, and three days for the drive back. Toss in a day for the detour to and viewing of the Grand Canyon and that accounts for your entire 10 days, again assuming that "sometime Friday" means early enough on Friday that you can get a full day's driving in, NOT after work on Friday evening. So, you see, you really don't have any "rest of the time" left to explore. There are a few venues along your route that are worth seeing and that won't chew up a lot of time, including Petrified Forest National Park, Petroglyph National Monument, and perhaps Cadillac Ranch, but you will really need to buckle down and devote most of your time to trucking down the road to make this trip work in the time you have.
