  1. Default San DIego to Grand Canyon

AS part of our America tour in August/Sep (LA - San Diego - Grand Canyon - Vegas - LA) we will be driving from San Diego to Grand Canyon. From what we can see it is a 8-9 hour drive so we were hoping to stop off somewhere for the night on this drive. Can anyone suggest a nice area to stay for the night? We were looking at Lake Havasu, but if anyone can offer any other suggestion or confirm this is a nice place that would be fab! We are just looking for something with nice scenery really. Don't really want to be more than about 4 hours from Grand CAnyon so the rest of our drive the next day wont be too long.

    Welcome to the RTA Forum!

Actually, GC to San Diego is going to take you about 10 hours - and more if you hit traffic. 9 hours assumes you'd never have to stop for food/fuel, etc, and 8 hours is just completely unrealistic.

Lake Havasu is a good possible stop, although it will likely take a touch more than 4 hours to get there. You could also look at going to Phoenix, which is a little longer route but also would fit for a good stop about 4 hours away. One final option that you might consider is Laughlin Nevada, which has lots of casino/hotels right along the Colorado River and you can at times find some very good deals.

    Default London bridge.

Hello and welcome to the RTA forums !

Lake Havasu would be quite apt for a place to stay for the night given your user name, you could visit London bridge while there.

It is more like a 10 hour plus drive from SD to GC so it's a good idea to do an overnight stop and Lake Havasu would give you time, if you wanted, to drive through Joshua tree NP on route. You could also opt to drive through Anza Borrego Desert state park and along the Salton sea on the way to Joshua tree, but it will add 2 or 3 hours to Havasu as opposed to taking I-8/CA111 to Blythe and then I-10 to US/AZ 95.

I did almost exactly that a couple years ago. I took the scenic roads from San Diego to Laughlin and spent the night at Harrah's for $25. The next day I took scenic roads to the GC. I'll list below the routes I took, be advised that with the secondary roads and sightseeing, this is going to be 2 pretty full days.

I took I-8 east out of SD to CA-67. At Ramona, CA-78 to Santa Ysabel. CA-79 to Aguanga, CA-371 to CA-74 to Palm Desert. I-10 east to Cottonwood Springs entrance through Joshua Tree. Went out the north entrance (Utah Trail) into 29 Palms. Amboy Rd to Amboy, Old 66 east to I-40 to Needles. River Rd into Laughlin. This is about 360 miles, and you should allow at least 8 hours.

Next day, cross the river into Bullhead City and head up to Oatman via Bullhead Pkwy, AZ-95, and Boundary Cone Rd. From Oatman, cross Sitgreaves Pass and head into Kingman. From Kingman, take Old 66 through Peach Springs to Seligman, I-40 to Williams, and AZ-64 into GC. This is about 250 miles, allow about 6 hours plus time spent wandering around Oatman.

Thanks so much for all the information! We are allowing 2 days for the trip, as we realised it was going to be too much to try to do in a day. I am going to have a look at some of the suggested places, and will let you know what we decide. Thanks again for all the help
