Default Depends on What You Mean by "Best"

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

As always, 'best' is a relative term, and a personal one as well. So it depends on your own criteria and tastes. If all you care about is speed in getting there, then I-95 is the obvious route of choice. If you had a couple of days for the trip and wanted a seafront adventure, then NC-12 down the Outer Banks, a ferry over to Cedar Island, and US-17 into Myrtle Beach. Something of a compromise, but without any seashore, is US-13/US-701 through Greenville and Goldsboro can be driven in a relaxed day.
