  1. Default New York to Los Angeles road trip in June - pl. advise

Me and my girlfriend just wrapped up our PhD’s at Michigan State University. And we would like to go on a road trip through USA. We have about three weeks. We have a decent amount of money – it should not be a problem unless it becomes outrageous. We are looking at the time period in June. We initially planned to do New York to Los Angeles. These days we are thinking of doing – Boston-New York-Niagara Falls-Lansing-New Orleans-Houston-Santa Fe-Grand Canyon-Vegas-Death Valley-california west coast and end at Los Angeles. We would like to rent a convertible that is decently priced.

We have just started planning on this, and we are already running into problems regarding that convertible. People don’t seem to want to rent convertibles for one way.

    So the question(s) is:

    (1) Does the above plan in the above time frame sound ridiculous? Is it possible?

    (2) Any suggestions/advice?

    (3) Any suggestions for the convertible?

Any advice/suggestions/criticisms/opinions are welcome, please help – we really want to do this but we really don’t know where to start from.

    Thanks a lot!

Default Line Up the Car First - The Rest Will Follow

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

I did a quick web search and found three companies that at least gave me a price for a one-way rental on a convertible from Los Angeles to New York: Enterprise, Dollar and National. But such rentals can in no way be considered cheap. If you are over 25, you might want to see what you can find by checking their websites or even contacting them directly. If you are under 25, underage driver fees will make renting almost any car for a three week on-way rental prohibitively expensive. Be sure to check with your current insurance carrier, credit card, and auto club (if any) to see what insurance coverage you already have that extends to a rental, and then be sure to get a quote which includes ALL taxes and fees, including drop-off fee and extra mileage tariff, and any geographic restrictions.

If you can line up a car, the rest of your plan is fine. You won't have a lot of time to do much more than what you already have listed (and the sights along that general route) but that should be fine.
