  1. Default Miami to New York - with dog!

My husband and I - and our young Keeshond dog - want to drive from Miami to New York in late June early July. We would appreciate any advice on good places to stop en route. We expect to take about a week over the journey, which I think is described as needing 18 hours of driving time. Any advice gratefully received!

    Default Start With These Pointers

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

As you might imagine, New York to Miami (with or without children or pets) is a popular journey. So let me first direct you to this discussion of the two general routes between those two cities (besides the obvious I-95 route). Generally speaking, state parks allow pets as long as they're on a leash and are cleaned up after. The same is also true of national parks but the areas where pets are allowed are much more restricted. National wildlife refuges and historic sites are usually the most restrictive for obvious reasons. Most motels will take pets up to a certain size which should include your Keeshond, as long as he is quiet and does not disturb other guests. They may require a small fee or deposit, so you should check ahead to avoid disappointment or problems when all you want is to get settled for the night.

Thanks for the advice. I'll look into the link you gave me as a good starting point.

In North Carolina, stop for some Carolina bbq, cole slaw, hushpuppies and tea.

If you're going up the coast, stop at Calabash, NC on the NC-SC border for some really fine seafood, especially the Calabash-style shrimp.

Thanks for those tips, I'm going to put them in my new Road Trip Journal. But what is a hushpuppy? I thought they were shoes. Sorry, I'm an ignorant Brit!

    Default Hushpuppies...

...are deep fried cornmeal balls, one of a number of regional southern dishes like grits, pone, collard greens and sweet tea, that you should try if you see them on a menu - at least once.
