  1. Default Tioga Pass Opening 2010

    Hi,

Can anyone tell me when Tioga Pass is likely to open this year?

    Many thanks

    Gary

    Default We can only guess

    Hi Gary -

Every year we have a little competition around here to predict when the Tioga Pass will close and open.

You can also find historical data for the Pass linked at that location, but a 100% accurate predictor is impossible to find.

I'm going to say June 5. I hope sooner though.

If you'd like to use that guess and potentially win a nice prize, you should post it on the contest page of the forum - which Tim linked to in his post above.

  5. Default Tioga Pass - May 26 2010

Due to our childrens schooling I have had to bring forward our holiday to California. We arre currently in San Francisco.

My bottom dollar question is will Highway 120 / Tioga Pass be open on May 26?

If planning an alternative as a stopping point to get to Furnace Creek / Death Valley would Lake Isabella be a good choice?

    Many thanks in advance

    Default unlikely

If you look at the tread linked by Tim above, you'll see several updates on the latest plowing of Tioga Pass.

Having said that, it is still closed right now, and it doesn't look like this will be the week that it opens, so yes, going around through Lake Isabella will likely be your best bet.

Not only are Tioga (120), Sonora (108) and Ebbetts (4) still closed, right now Carson (88) has chain controls in effect. You have to go north to US-50 or south to 178 or 58 to get across the Sierras.

I got through the Carson Pass on Friday, but we got snowed on leaving Yosemite Valley yesterday afternoon. The forecast was for "20% chance of rain", but the storm blew in quickly and turned from rain to snow at Tunnel View. As we headed south on CA-41 we gained elevation and got snow through Mariposa Grove before it turned to rain again. Be careful out there!

    Default Very werid Spring

Normally in late May, it is a steady 110 to 115 degrees (F) in Las Vegas --Yesterday afternoon it was 60 degrees (F) and we had about 4 inches of snow in the local mountains...

    Very weird Spring this year!
