  1. Default San Francisco road trip

We are going to be in San Francisco April 10 for 4 days, want to take a road trip either south to carmel or west to Yosemite. We do realize the weather will be a factor @ Yosemite, and wondering with alot not being accessible, that time of year, would it be worth going there and seeing it anyway.

    Default A wonderland.

Hello and welcome to the RTA forums !

The valley floor in Yosemite will be accessible and the scenery is breathtakingly beautiful. The waterfalls will be flowing nicely by then as well to add to the spectacle and you could see warm weather. However you should check conditions closer to leaving if that's where you decide to go as it's possible to still have snow chain requirements in place.

    Default Yosemite in Spring

Should be grand, lots of water coming over the falls, and very low likelihood of hitting snow (although as SW Dave points out check weather and road reports before leaving). The high country (Tioga Pass and Glacier Point) will almost certainly be closed, but there is more than enough to be seen in the Valley to make it worth going.

You can get road reports online from the Caltrans website here, just plug in the route number (120 for the most direct route).

Note that from The City this is a 4-5 hour drive one-way, or 8-10 hours total roundtrip. Wouldn't leave much time to see the valley. You should consider doing an overnight either in the park, or just outside. If you don't like driving mountain roads in the dark, you should leave SF early afternoon, if staying the night before at the park.

Along the way, just of CA108, is the longest covered bridge in California at Knight's Ferry:

Carmel is much much closer, and can easily be done as a day trip (4-5 hours round trip).

Pacific Ocean along 17 mile drive in Carmel:

Other day trips include the wine country (Napa and/or Sonoma Valleys; about 3 hours round trip). Make sure you pick a designated driver if you plan on tasting wine (or at least have one person only taking small sips from somebody else's tastings... the wineries are OK with this practice).

By April, the vines will probably have started to leaf out; here's what things look like at the beginning of March, when the mustard is is full bloom:

P.S. Don't drive west to get to Yosemite; there's a thing called the Pacific Ocean that way. ;)

Thanks; but I know with all the 'fun' you're having with the upgrade you'd probably rather be ANYWHERE else right now.

Here's a couple more Carmel shots for the viewing public:

It's not been that bad -- we're used to having about 50% of the code somewhat distressed -- No worries on our part at this point!
