    Default South West Road trip

Subject to getting flights arranged this week, we'll be heading for the South West for this years road trip.

    The outline plan is

1 Fly to Vegas, after a couple of days, pick up a car.
2 Head to Williams AZ, stay a couple of days and take the train up to the Grand Canyon and back in a day. Has anybody taken this train and can give any tips/comments ?
3 Head to Sedona, probably the long way round via Prescott. Any advice on things to see and do in this area ?
4 Head to Winslow AZ via Sunset Crater and Meteor Crater
5 Head to Chinle and Canyon de Chelley
6 Head to Monument Valley. A quick internet search suggests hotels in the area are full. Is this likely ?
7 Head to Durango for a couple of days and take the Durango to Silverton train there and back in a day. Has anybody taken this train and can give any tips/comments ?
8 Head to Santa Fe area. See los Alamos. Anybody been there and have any comments ?
9 Head to Albuquerque to fly on.

Any comments tips hints or suggestions are welcome.

Don't know what dates you have in mind (nor the potentially even more significant issue of budget) but I just did a check on a few dates in July/August and The View appears to have availability.

    Default Nice trip.

I was going to suggest Red rock state park in the Sedona area but sadly it will close on the 3rd June as part of financial cut backs.

Although MV does get busy it is sometimes the case that the booking window on the Internet is not yet open for dates that far in advance, in which case an e-mail or phone call can sometimes secure vacancies.

Some great suggestions from Howard on Santa Fe can be seen here. If you wanted to take a detour to visit Taos Pueblo between Durango and Santa Fe you could go through Pagosa springs and visit the famous hot springs on 160 and later stop at the Rio Grande gorge on the 64 a little before Taos and take a walk on the bridge over looking the river, although quite a long day.

Thanks Peter. We did check the View last weekend and there was no availability. When I've checked again there is now.
