  1. Default Costs & Car Rental

My boyfriend & I are thinking of doing a 2 or 3 month road trip around the states next summer. Does anyone know the best place to rent a car for that long? Also What does everyone think the average price per day that we would need to budget for. We are thinking we will probally half camp half cheap motels.

There is no simple answer to your question. Car rental rates can vary dramatically depending upon a variety of factors including the exact dates and location of your pickup and drop off, what type of car you are looking for, even your country of residence, etc. If you are looking do a one way rental, you can expect to pay a significant drop off fee, and if you are both driving, you'll have an additional driver fee. Also, your age is another big factor, as if you are under 25, you'll be looking at a fee of around $25 per day for each driver - and if you are under 21, renting a car is generally impossible.

Really the best thing I can say is to simply shop around as see what sort of numbers you find by looking at the websites of the major car rental companies and the travel booking sites like kayak, expedia, etc.

Costs can range from $150/week on up for a rental car, depending on what vehicle you get and where you rent from. Remember to include costs for insurance on top of this amount, and if either of you are under 25 years old, there will be additional fees, and you will also want to check for unlimited mileage.

Setting up a budget depends on what types of things you are planning to do, where you plan to stay, how much time you spend on the road each day, etc. $50/day would be low in my experience, with $100 being closer to the norm. Remember to factor in:

    -Car rental

as typical core categories of any trip. It is possible to eat and lodge cheaply on the road, but if you find that in order to do your total trip that you are significantly cutting on either of these items (such as eating nothing but buffet mashed potatoes), that you may need to rethink your ability to take a trip of this magnitude.
