  1. Default Las Vegas to Yosemite - Australian traveler

Hi guys new to the page and after some advice and ideas

We are looking at traveling from Vegas to Yosemite and unsure which is the best route to take, the bakersfield route or the route through mammoth lakes, we want to stay over night somewhere on the way as well as 8-9hr drive is a bit much.

We are leaving Vegas on the 13th of march to stay at yosemite lodge for 2 nights.

Any info or ideas would be much appreciated

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

Unfortunately, the road from Mammoth Lakes to Yosemite, CA-120 over Tioga Pass, will still be snow-bound in March, so you should really plan on taking the long way around the south of the Sierra Nevada through Bakersfield.

    Thanks for your help.

Is bakersfield a good place to stop over night?

    are there any other places?

Yes, if you go the southern route, I would stay in Lake Isabella -- although there are plenty of nice places in Bakersfield.

But, March is an ideal time to see wildflowers and so I could urge you to go north from Las Vegas -- thru Death Valley NP and I would stay overnight at either Bishop, Mammoth Lakes or June Lakes and then cross over the Sierra Nevada mountains on US-50 and then south to Yosemite!

    Hi there Dodger

    Aussie here too!.

Same time last year we drove straight from Vegas to a little town called Oakhurst which is 14 miles short of the entry to Yosemite. It was about 7 hours of easy driving by memory...maybe shorter?

I wanted to stay in a smaller town to soak up some atmosphere aftger staying in LA, Vegas. It was great!!! Great Pizza in town too!
