  1. Default Toronto to Los Angeles in 4 days

Hi I will be driving from Toronto to Los Angeles in early February alone. I’m looking to do it in 4 days, day 1 Toronto to Iowa City IA, day 2 Iowa city to Denver, day 3 Denver to Las Vegas, and finally day 4 to La. I am mainly concerned about driving through the Rockies in the winter as I am not familiar with the road conditions during this time of the year. Please note I am 20 years old and play poker for a living and can stay up with ease for 30 hours straight... I don’t think driving 12 hours will affect me very much. I have never been on a roadtrip of this magnitude so any advice would be much appreciated.

    Thanks Scott

    Default less bragging more reality

    Welcome to the RTA Forum!

Its great that you can stay up for 30 hours, but its really irrelevant to this trip. Staying up well into the night while playing cards isn't anywhere near the same thing as operating a 2 ton machine at 70 mph. As far as I know, no one has ever died while falling asleep at a poker table, yet thousands of people die every year because they -or someone else- fell asleep at the wheel. And the vast majority of the time, its people with the "it won't be a problem" attitude that you're displaying who cause these crashes.

The fact is, you have never done a trip like this, and you have no idea how your body is going to respond to being on the road for 12 hours a day. You also need to remember that driving multiple days is a lot more draining than just getting in the car and going for a long single day trip (think sprinter vs marathon runner)

Having said that, you might be able to make the trip to LA in 4 days, although even that really is pushing beyond what we recommend for a 2500 mile trip - especially as a solo driver. If you are going to do it, safely, you'll need to rework your plan so you are driving 4 full days - not the 3.5 you've currently got planned.

Right now you're planning to drive 700-800 miles a day to Vegas - which is far more than 12 hours on the road in real world travel conditions - and is far more than one person can safely drive for 3 consecutive days. Even with multiple drivers, we would strongly recommend against such a plan, as a solo driver, its flat out homicidal.

If you have perfect weather, and see almost no traffic, you need to be looking at Moline IL, Julesburg CO, and Salina UT for your stops. Even those will require you to be on the road for 13 hours or more each day, and day 3 is especially problematic because right before Salina is a 100 mile gap where you won't have any services to stop should you realise that you are doing too much. Again, even this really is beyond what we generally consider safe, and I would recommend taking at least one more day - especially in winter where you have the chance of being delayed by weather anyway, and when you are starting from a position of no experience where you simply don't know how your body will respond to a long roadtrip.

  3. Default Chains for tires

Thanks MidWest Mike for your response. Your route is a lot more practical then my original route. I was wondering if any of the roads on the I76 through Colorado would require snow chains for my tires...I'm not really sure what to expect for road conditions, nor how well maintained the roads are in that area?

    Default wrong spot

First of all, I-76 is still entirely east of the rockies, you don't cross the mountains until you are on the other side of Denver.

And all interstate highways are given top priority to be cleared as quickly as possible. However, there still will be storms where they can't keep up, and if conditions are so bad where you'd need to think about chains, you really would be better of just sitting and waiting for the road crews to do their job and get the roads cleared.

Right now, I-70 over Vail Pass west of Denver is requiring chains, the big series of storms that just passed through the Western states dumped up to 7 feet of snow in the Rockies. There's also supposed to be more coming later this week. Keep abreast of conditions and forecasts before committing to a specific route.

My apologies if I'm reading too much into your post, but are you aware that Las Vegas has a strict 21 law to enter a casino, other than in the company of an adult to go to a restaurant? Being 20, you may be very disappointed at what you can legally do there, you certainly won't be able to go find a poker game. The only casinos that you can enter are the (native american) Indian-operated casinos in California, which allow gambling if you are 18. The legal drinking age is also 21 in ALL states.

To give you an idea how good a job the mountain states highway departments do, at this time there are no longer any chain requirements in the state of Colorado. This is 12 hours after the last report I read that had chains required on both I-70 and US-6.

  7. Default Thanks

Thanks for the info glc, and I am well aware of the laws in the USA I reside in la for 4 months of the year. It should be an interesting experince driving across the country.
