    Default Short RoadTrip

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

San Francisco to Carmel is only about 125-150 miles, yet still has some great sights and attractions. Although not as well known as it is farther south at Big Sur, CA-1 also follows some beautiful coastline in San Mateo and Santa Cruz counties. But I particularly enjoyed a somewhat different route south out of San Francisco, and that was following CA-35 out of San Mateo through a number of parks and 'Open Spaces' to CA-9 down through Bolder Creek to Santa Cruz. Once in the Carmel/Monterey area the obvious big attractions are the Monterey Aquarium and the Carmel Mission, but if your a history buff be sure to take the guided walking tours of Old Monterey.

    Default Sure, a few are.........

The big marina/restaurant on the water at Half-Moon Bay, lots of sights and sounds in Santa Cruz (including the huge wharf/pier which one actually drives on and parks on while dining/shopping/strolling). The public park at the rocky point immediately north of the Santa Cruz pier/wharf is a great place to watch surfers jump off the rocks directly into the break. Any number of the small beach areas between Santa Cruz and Capitola and just beyond. The small community of Capitola itself is a neat little beach community. There's a state park in a Coastal Redwood forest within a handful of miles inland from Santa Cruz.
