Default matamoras pa to cali & in between 37 days

hi there, 4 friends and I are traveling cross country for 37 days. starting matamoras pa, - to california and inbetween. We will be camping through out the trip in some national parks, and we will be driving a dodge durango with a rack on top for our camping gear. the estimated expense per person is $ 3, 000.Note we will be stopping at family/friends house through out the trip as well to reduce hotel expense. I would like to see your input, advice, tips, as this itinerary has been revised 3 times in the last 6 months of planning. or if we missed any "must see's". Also, a big thing for us.. is we want to stay away from the "tourist traps" as we would rather experience and explore the real way. Again, any input, tips would be highly appreciated as we want to make sure all the bumps are erased as we set journey on may 26th!

see next thread for full itinerary

    FUN FACTS:
    approx 9,000 miles
    over 6 days driving
    19 states
    8 national parks
    3 oil changes
    270 gallons of gas
lowest elevation : 282 ft below sea level- death valley
highest elevation: 14,100 ft - Pikes Peak

    Welcome to the RTA Forum!

Well, you didn't share you itinerary, and one person's "must see" can easily be the next person's "tourist trap." so generic recommendations on a trip of this magnitude can be difficult.

I will say that your budget seems very reasonable, and you should be able to travel quite comfortably based on your current plans at your available funds.

I will also say that its quite common to keep revising your plans, and when you're talking about 4 people over a month, just 3 revisions seems pretty low. The biggest thing I can say in this regard is that you should make sure that everyone's interests and perspectives are being met, and you have a system in place to handle the inevitable disagreements. Face it, its simply not possible to erase all the bumps before you get on the road, because the beauty of a roadtrip is that you'll certainly find things you didn't expect. This quiz is something you should go through with your friends as preparation to get on the road.

You need to add 20% to your computer-generated drive times. Computers never have to stop to eat, get gas, switch drivers, stretch their legs, or go to the bathroom. They are also never delayed by traffic, construction, or even red lights.

We will add 20% to the times. Those times were just estimated. Thanks. Is Microsoft Streets worth the buy? Or is google maps just as accurate?

Google is just as accurate - they both have about the same optimistic drive times. I use Streets because it doesn't require a Net connection and I have a GPS module for my laptop. Google is probably going to be more up-to-date.

    Default Things to consider.

If you are to visit all those National parks you should buy an annual pass for $80 as it will save you money. Also, if you are planning on camping in the parks you will need to book as early as possible as they will book up quickly in the summer Months, the annual fee does not include camping.

we want to stay away from the "tourist traps" as we would rather experience and explore the real way.
Almost every place on your itinerary could be described as a "tourist trap" but for good reason, they are spectacular and easy accessible [especially important with a busy itinerary] and during the summer Months are bound to be busy.

    FUN FACTS:
    approx 9,000 miles
    over 6 days driving
I hope that's a typo and should state 16 days ! A robot on a simulator that could drive for 24 hours a day at close to 65mph nonstop maybe, oh yeah or a mapping program ;-)

On paper your trip looks fine but in my opinion could turn into a real test of friendship being in such close proximity for over a Month with having so much to do. You could spend days in many of your locations and not have enough time yet each day you spend in one place is equivalent to 500 miles on the road the next day.

Don't think I am trying to put you off, it's more a forewarning that days in Yellowstone, Yosemite and the like will be memorable, but not that restful as there is so much to see and do and you will also be racking up extra miles throughout.

    Have a great trip !

We will definitely get a annual pass to the National Parks. Is it one pass per car for $80 dollars. We will book as early as possible but it something happens along the way, we might get backed up a day or two and all the camping bookings will be off.

Estimate 9000 miles divided by 37 days..its roughly 243 miles a day. So days well drive 500 miles and other days 0-20 miles. It might test our friendship, nerves, whatever people want to call it, but its a once in a lifetime opportunity.
    Thanks for your information.

Default Per vehicle [in most cases]

Is it one pass per car for $80 dollars.
Yes, it's normally per vehicle and it's occupants although I think there are exceptions where they charge per person in some areas and that would include 4 persons.

    Details here.
