    Default Blue Ridge Parkway closures-Winter 2010

    Winter RoadTrippers should always be aware there are no efforts to clear snow and ice from the BRP and as a result, there are often closures of segments of the Parkway for days or weeks.

    As a result of a Christmas Day ice storm, however, large portions of the BRP are closed in NC and VA and are likely to remain closed for many weeks. Literally thousands of trees are down and the cold snap has prevented ice melting and has brought more snow.

    I'd check ahead on the BRP website for information about closures before setting out.

    The Parkway's website does not specifically list closed sections as of today's date. This seems misleading inasmuch as there's a "closures" link on the home page.

    But, elsewhere on the home page, a section discusses the December snow and ice events and gives the road conditions phone number, advising RoadTrippers to call for specifics. That number is:
