The dates are dummy dates, and I'm thinking about cutting a few places out just to knock a few days off to be able to spend longer in others. I was thinking of cutting out roswell, as it's a couple of hundred miles out of the way just for the UFO museum. Does anyone have any other suggestions to possible help us cut down on the days? Extra driving hours do not matter as we are both able to drive this time around!

Anyones feedback would be great, especially suggestions for the places that are in the list or suggestions of things to forget.

Default double back and double time

A few things stand out right off the top.

Most of your time estimates are clearly pulled right from a mapping program, and as such, simply aren't really within the reach of reality.

You are also doing an incredible amount of backtracking. For example, you're going from LA to San Francisco, skipping both the coast highway and the inland national parks, and just shooting up I-5, you're continuing all the way up to Redwoods, but then you're going to go all the way back south to Yosemite and Sequoia? That really doesn't make much sense - especially when you're then heading back north again to Yellowstone.

I think it would make much more sense to hit Sequoia and Yosemite on your way to SF, continue north to Redwoods, and then start making your way east across Oregon and Idaho to Yellowstone. You'd still be very able to work in Bryce, Las Vegas, and Death Valley, just work them in at the end of your trip after the Grand Canyon. That on its face would seem much more efficient and save you quite a lot of miles.

Good points, thank you. For some reason I felt like I wanted to do that stuff first, but it definitely makes a lot more sense now. I might just leave the redwoods, which is a shame. I don't know yet though, we'll see. Does this look better now?

    Default a big miss

Well, if you skip the redwoods, and are taking an inland route to San Francisco, then you're completely skipping the California Coast, which seems like a pretty major thing to leave off a trip like this.

Also, we've established the kind of places you're looking at stopping. In future posts, please don't continue to cut and paste your entire detailed itinerary and possible motel stops. If you list the major points from here on out, it will be easier for everyone.

The google maps route is just to get the jist of the route, the roads on there are not the ones we are necessarily planning on using. The coastal route to San Francisco would definitely be included in the trip.

I listed the motels we plan on using, incase anyone had any advice about the specific motels we have chosen. Last time, from asking about particular motels we were staying in, we were told to avoid one or two which was very helpful, and seeing as our route is a well travelled one, a lot of people may have used/intend on using some of the motels we are.

    Default thats fine but

Its fine that you listed your motel ideas in your first post, but when you are cutting and pasting all of that information into your later posts, it makes them extremely long and difficult to read through.

If you have specific questions about any of those places, you can certainly do that too. Its purely a matter of making things easier for everyone who is reading, and ultimately, will mean getting better advice for your trip.

Well, this actually makes for a huge difference in your plan. In your original plan you had yourself going from LA to SF in 6 hours. The only way to even come close to that is to take I-5.

If you are taking the coastal route, you need to alot at least 2 days.

If that is your plan, then going to Yosemite on the way to San Francisco doesn't make much sense either. If you are skipping redwoods now, then its much more efficent to hit Yosemite as you make your way east towards Salt Lake City.

I'd drive straight up the coast and slot Sequoia in at the end of the trip, between Death Valley and LA.
